Learn to manual focus? And there are plenty of lenses out there that focus...especially for the beginners here. I think it would be safe to say anyone here could stick with the lens kit and be happy. But I see what you're saying....some day I will definitely upgrade my body

You can get good shots from point and shoots too, which are definitely cheaper than a DSLR. But if you have the money, the D3000 (what I have) is arguably the best beginner/'prosumer' DSLR on the market right now. Like I said, that's $500 and comes with a zoom...
My D3000 came with the 18-55mm, it's about $500 depending on where you get it. The 55-200mm was about $220 I think. Also have a bag and tripod, multiple cards, and other misc bull**** worth another few hundred dollars.
