get a secondary code if you don't know how to here is a tutorial
How to get the Secondary error code

The specific type of hardware failure can be determined by a \"hidden\" error code

* Turn the xbox 360 on, and wait till the 3 red lights are flashing.
* Press and hold the sync up button (the small white one), while holding that button press the eject button.
* The LEDs will now blink the first number in the code (as described below).
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the second number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the third number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the forth number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will go back to the 3 red flashing lights.
You should be able to determine the difference between the 3 flashing lights and the error code lights by the rate in which they flash.

Here is how you interpret the LEDs to get the code number:

* All four lights flashing - 0
* One light flashing - 1
* Two Lights flashing - 2
* Three lights flashing - 3

You will for example get an error code like 0102 if you get 4 lights after the first click, 1 after the second, 4 after the third and 2 after the fourth click of the eject button...

Causes of RROD- ANYTHING that goes wrong with your xbox.

It is anything hardware related/overheating/av.

As above already posted, You need to find the error code and that will tell you what is actually wrong with your xbox. Everyone assumes that if they have RROD its a 0102 or w/e and that's the cold solder joint under the cpu.

Even if you did have that, Replacing the thermal paste and x-clamps does sweet F*ck all really, Your just adding a little extra pressure hoping the solder balls will touch. To properly fix your xbox if it indeed did have a 0102 error would be a reflow/reball by a professional.

Details for Error code E10/0022

Description:

This error is caused by a bridged/shorting solder joint under the GPU, (H)ANA-chip or in between.It can also be power related though, for example if you are drawing power from one of the regulators that power the GPU and HANA-chip.Can also be a component that is missing or damaged so look for missing parts near the GPU and the HANA chip. In extremely rare cases it might also be related to the lines that lead from HANA to the CPU.
The chances are however higher that it is the GPU than the HANA chip so you should always first concentrate on the GPU.

Another cause could be due to a broken trace under the board near one of the ram blocks, check the picture in the reference section. Thank you arvydas for reporting this solution!
This error also show up if the CPU ! was taken off the mainboard.

Fixes:

1)If you soldered anything to the mainboard before it occured, whatever you are powering from this point is drawing too much power so get rid of it.Also get rid of everything that you can see that might bridge anything near the GPU.
2) X-Clamp replacement
3) Reflow GPU and HANA chip
4) If it\'s not the GPU/(H)ANA, it might in rare cases be the CPU and can be fixed by reflowing the CPU.
5) if you flash with xell on JTAG-fixed xbox360 this will appear, flash back to original.
6) also can be caused by a broken trace (see link below).

4422 (0022) whichever way it should read, is the 2ndary code.
Simple google search shows https://xbox-experts.com/errorcode/E10/0022/

To which I would redirect you to my first reply. If you want to chance it with no experience you can do a temp job with a heat gun but that usually will break your xbox more then it will do any good for most people.

Is there a way to eyeball the motherboard and tell if the GPU/CPU needs to be reflowed or is it more of a trial and error type?

You match the error number to the component that needs reflowed/reballed. Nothing you can do visually.

As above said, These error codes take away most of the trial and error, There are usually 1-3 solutions that will fix the xbox. A reball/reflow by a professional of your gpu and cpu for good measure would most certainly fix your issue and give you a lot more life from your system. A reflow with a heat gun can work wonders for someone who just wants a quick temp fix, The life span until another RROD varies as it's not a real fix, But I have customers who want it cheap and I've had most consoles see years with the cheap fix.

But the choice is yours, IMO If your wanting a hacked xbox. Spend the money and get a Slim RGH nothing else.

If your wanting a xbox that works. Sell your RROD online for $20 with PSU/AVI cables. Then use that to find another phat xbox for $50, I barely pay more for a slim :wink:. There is always kids/teens/adults looking to make some quick cash!

RROD is caused by an Over-Heating Issue. Best bet is to sell the RROD on eBay then use that to buy a slim.
