Playable Characters:
The new characters needed all-new skill trees. Borderlands has four characters, but it's really more like twelve. Rather than nerf classes during play testing, Armstrong said they find which one people are favoring and make the others stronger. The goal is to differentiate them so much that players can see another person using the same character, but in a completely different way. By placing skill points, utilizing different gear, focusing on the o2 mechanism, the ice and/or the ground smashing you can have 2 of the same characters functioning completely different. Players will often take a look at the last skill in a tree, and base their picks on how to get to that. This time, the skills are laid out in such a way that the last ability will reflect the abilities that came before. The last one will not just come out of left field, they all echo each other.

Nisha the Lawbringer was originally revealed to us as the Sheriff of Lynchwood in Borderlands 2. Nisha was, at the time, in a relationship with Handsome Jack.

Wilhelm is a playable Character in Borderlands the Pre-Sequel! His first appearance is made in Borderlands 2 as half Hyperion Engineer, half Loader in the End of the Line story mission. Wilhelm wasn’t always half man, half machine, however. In the event of Borderlands the Pre-Sequel we’ll see the character as he was when he was all man. The game will see the events that turned him into what he is, or was, played out.

Wilhelm is kind of like the Cyber Commando of the game which is interesting because that's name of one of his skill trees. He's got a few skills similar to Commandos, mainly Axton, and his Action Skill has a slight resemblance. It's a summoning skill with the same Cooldown and you can refund the Cooldown by recalling your summon. He's still got his own unique list of skill as well.

Upgrading Wilhelm's skill tree will, overtime, add robotic parts to his body, possibly leading up to his form in Borderlands 2.

The Enforcer's (Wilhelm) action skill is called Air Power. It summons drones named Wolf and Saint that can help Wilhelm attack foes or supplement himself and his teammates, respectively. While Wolf takes to the offensive, killing enemies with high damage blasts, Saint stays by Wilhelm's side, recharging his shields. This skill comes from the boss fight in Borderlands 2 against Wilhelm, when he was in his oversized Loader stage. Hold the Action Skill button to recall your drones and refund some of your Cooldown. Active Time 35 seconds. Cooldown 42 seconds.
Everytime you upgrade a Cyborg Augmentation skill, it will add robotic pieces to Wilhelm.

Athena is the first fully revealed character in Borderlands the Pre-Sequel. She first appeared as a non-playable character in the DLC for 2009’s Borderlands, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx. The former Lance Assassin allied with the Vault Hunters and worked alongside them in taking down General Knoxx. Players first meet her at T-Bone Junction at the start of the DLC’s main quest line.

Her class is considered to be the sort of “tank” style whose Action Skill, Kinetic Aspis, is a shield that comes up in her left arm when activated. The shield deflects incoming damage from the front. When the Action Skills timer runs down or low, it can then be tossed (Captain America style) at nearby enemies. The shield will then deal damage to the enemies it bounces between until it fades away. Note that the Aspis will only ricochet between enemies if the Wrath of the Goddess skill is unlocked, see below for details.

The Gladiator's (Athena) Action Skill is the Kinetic Aspis. The Aspis is a shield that comes up in her left hand and absorbs bullets from the front as they're shot at her. It can store a finite amount of damage as energy, When the skills timer is up or you press the Action Skill Button a second time, the shield can then be tossed Captain America style at enemies to deal double the damage it absorbed plus the base damage of the shield itself. Claptrap the Fragtrap is arguably the franchise favorite. First seen in 2009’s Borderlands, Claptrap marks his return but this time, he’s playable. We first met him in the original when the Vault Hunters were fresh off the bus in Fyrestone and Claptrap was merely a guidance robot that helped the Vault Hunters along with tedious tasks such as opening doors and getting maimed by bandits.

It was during the events of the original games final DLC, Claptrap’s Robot Revolution, that Claptrap decided to rebel against the humans for their rampant abuse of the CL4P-TP units throughout Pandora. After the Vault Hunters defeated the Interplanetary Ninja Assassin, Handsome Jack, leader of the Hyperion Corporation, ordered the destruction of all Claptrap units on Pandora. This character class is not some random Claptrap unit, though. The Claptrap we meet in the first Borderlands is the same as the Claptrap seen in Borderlands 2 and the playable class in Borderlands the Pre-Sequel.

Randy Crawford challenged the Aussies, asking "Can you make Claptrap a playable character?" Tony Lawrence responded: I don’t want to make Claptrap playable unless he is going to be as lovable and annoying as he is in BL1 and 2.” Randy ‘s answer: “Ok, do that.” So Claptrap is made to make players go either “Omg, Claptrap is the coolest funnest best playable character ever", or "Omg, can we please not have Claptrap on our server” They got that dynamic going, and people will understand it as soon as they start revealing his features. Claptrap is prepared to deal with the environment appropriately, is all they are willing to say.

Claptrap's Action Skill is VaultHunter.EXE:
"VaultHunter.EXEwill analyze the situation, determine which Vault Hunter would do the best job, and then load an ACTION PACKAGE allowing Claptrap to fight in that manner for a short period of time. It also gives you Full Health and Heatlh Regeneration. VaultHunter.EXE is still in beta and its definition of "Vault Hunter" is questionable at best.

Warning: VaultHunter.EXE is currently classified as malware. Your allies may be affected."

NPC's & Game Mechanics:
  • Handsome Jack - Main antagonist from Borderlands 2.
  • Crazy Earl - Black Market Vendor - "Whatchu want?!"
  • Janie Springs - Unknown Hyperion affiliate. According to GBX she is a Black Market merchant, in love with Mad Moxxi, and running the Vehicles in this game, Scooter will not be.
  • Red Belly - First revealed boss in the Pre-Sequel.
Axton - Commando from Borderlands 2
Salvador - Gunzerker from Borderlands 2
Maya - Siren from Borderlands 2
Zero - Assassin from Borderlands 2

The original playable characters from Borderlands 2 will not be playable in the Pre-Sequel. However, hinted by President of Gearbox Randy Pitchford, the four Vault Hunters will likely make an appearance in the game to assist the arc of Handsome Jack’s rise to villainy (See intro cutscene of Borderlands 2 where the Vault Hunters have previously entered conflict with the tyrant Hyperion Leader).

Marcus Kincaid - Ammo and weapons dealer in the franchise.
Roland - Soldier and leader of the Crimson Raiders.
Mordecai - Hunter and alcoholic.
Lilith - Playable Siren in Borderlands.
Brick - The Slab King.

No mention of the Characters listed above have been made. However, these characters have played major roles in all Borderlands games, including Marcus in the yet to be released Tales from the Borderlands, a game developed by Telltale games.

Lilith might be a part of the game though, as she appeared in the Game Trailer:

The Pre-Sequel" will be adding two new weapon types into the Borderlands franchise. One of which will be a ice type that will slowly freeze enemies untill they are at a complete stop.At which point you can intantly kill them with another attack. The second type of weapon is a laser type which supposedly will add fire damage as seen in the game play released.

Another thing to note about the weapons in this new Borderlands is that the loot system from Borderlands 2 will be returning.Seen at 1:25 of this video , you can see that a Rocket Torpedo appears in the chest. The Rocket Torpedo has been seen as a weapon in Borderlands 2.

New add-on effects have been shown like Moonshine which gives you a better chance of obtaining rare loot.
b1KivP9.jpg

Gearbox and 2k australia have said that the loot system will be similar to the last game. We can expect to see some favorites returning from the last game like the Unkempt Harold.

In the Pre-Sequel, we will see some familiar sights. The Conference Call, a well known Legendary Hyperion shotgun from Borderlands 2 is returning, but under a different name. It is now called Viral Marketer. If it comes in Cryo, is still unknown.

The Legendary Pistol we used to know as the Gub is also back. Its now named Zion, manufactured not by Bandit, but by SCAV. (All guns that used to be Bandit, are now made by SCAV.) The prefix we could see a glimpse of in one of the videos, is Two-Time, with x2 damage. And it had the new Cryo element. The red text said "Do you want to know more" but it is still not certain what kind of special effect this brings.

The loot system definitely looks similar to the one we know. The Viral Marketeer even had the Scalable prefix known from BL2, so some things are still like they used to, it seems.

Lasers are a separate weapon type first introduced in Borderlands: the Pre-Sequel, not much is known about this weapon type other than is does constant, focused damage onto a target.

Lasers create a powerful stream of energy that will deal constant damage to any enemy that comes into contact with the stream, lasers consume ammo at a fast rate so players must make sure that they can stay accurate on a target.

Lasers consume a entirely different ammunition pool, shown as a coil icon of sorts, with the ammo pool being about as big as a submachine gun's pool.

Five manufacturers are known to produce laser weapons: Dahl, Hyperion, Maliwan, Tediore and Scav (Bandit in BL2), each have a different laser output:
  • Dahl lasers fire blaster bolts, very similar to E-tech Blasters.
  • Hyperion lasers fire like a rail gun with reverse recoil.
  • Maliwan lasers fire a constant stream of energy, and (much like any other Maliwan weapon) are always elemental.
  • Tediore lasers are unknown at this point, only being briefly shown as a chest reward. Updated: Tediore lasers cause shock damage when reloaded, in addition to the normal explosive damage.
  • Scav lasers are unknown at this point, and have only been seen in gameplay trailers.
Franchise director Matthew Armstrong and 2K Australia studio manager Tony Lawrence explain the Laser:
When you think of a bullet, it fires in a straight parabolic arc. But in Borderlands you get shotgun shells that fire shotgun shells and you get curving bullets and arcing bullets, it would not be Borderlands if lasers weren’t treated with the same level of disrespect. Somewhere in there you'll find the laser that fulfills your laser needs. Some people want a Star Wars 'pew pew' gun, some people think of a laser as a quick-fire, some people think of it as a beam weapon like Ghostbusters. There's many different thoughts and promises of what a laser might be and the Pre-Sequel tries to fulfill all of them
9alFGxS.jpg
Cryo is an elemental damage type introduced in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and can appear on all weapons that are capable of having an elemental type (All manufacturers excluding
Torgue and Jakobs). Cryo elemental weapons are capable of slowing down and even freezing targets solid. Cryo Damage is particularly good against fast targets, where a Cryo proc would effectively slow down the enemy; if an enemy is frozen solid, then a strong enough Explosive attack can shatter the frozen enemy for a quick kill.
TSLps6k.gif
Cryo Elemental weapons have no known mechanics as of yet, with exception to the slowing and freezing abilities, players can also perform a ground pound attack by a completely frozen enemy (at a cost of some O2) for a quick kill, as the ground pound is classed as Explosive damage.

You can also get Cryo grenades, which will be interesting...

Vehicles will make a comeback in Borderlands the Pre-Sequel. During a demo from the developers, a vehicle was shown that resembled a Star Wars Speeder Bike. Gearbox stated this new vehicle will work like the Sand Skiff from Borderlands 2's Captain Scarlett and her Pirate's Booty. The vehicle is named Stingray. The Stingray has different weapons available. It also has some new features, that we have not seen from vehicles in the Borderlands before. You can launch the Stingray into the air, and do a ground stomp to crush your enemies. This launch can also be used to jump huge gaps you normally would not be able to make.
VWgaoD3.jpg

In the trailer, you can also see a Moon Buggy-like vehicle:
SGXOKsu.jpg
The Moon Buggy, unike the Stingray, works much like the cars we are used to in this franchise. It is however affected by the low gravity, but should be familiar enough to maneuver. It has a couple of different weapons to choose from as well.
The moon is named Elpis which is the Greek personification & spirit of hope which is the last thing to be freed from Pandora's Box.

It looks like pop culture references are still going strong...

Not sure what part this guy will play, but he looks smashing indeed:

Teasers, Trailers and Gameplay Demos:
The story takes place between the first Borderlands and Borderlands 2, focusing mainly on Handsome Jack’s rise to his famed villainous stature while exploring the Moon orbiting Pandora and the infamous Hyperion Moonbase floating in space throughout the Majority of Borderlands 2.
The Pre-Sequel will, similar to previous Borderlands titles, focus on four playable protagonists—all of whom were featured as NPCs in previous Borderlands games, working as henchmen for Handsome Jack, the antagonist of Borderlands 2. The plot will follow Handsome Jack's descent into villainy, focusing on his escape and capture of the Hyperion company's moonbase. The game will expand upon the engine and gameplay of Borderlands 2 and introduce new gameplay mechanics, including anti-gravity, freeze weapons, and oxygen tanks which can be used to navigate environments and perform special attacks.

EbAeqdB.jpg
As with previous games in the series, The Pre-Sequel will feature four playable characters, each with different classes and abilities. All four of The Pre-Sequel's protagonists were non-player characters (NPCs) in previous Borderlands games; the first of these characters is Athena, "the Gladiator", a rogue assassin of the Atlas Corporation first introduced in the Borderlands DLC campaign The Secret Armory of General Knoxx. Athena can use a temporary shield to absorb damage; this ability can be upgraded to make the shield itself into a weapon that can be thrown at enemies, and even allow it to absorb elemental damage which can in turn, be reflected back at enemies. The Hyperion engineer Wilhelm, "the Enforcer", can become increasingly augmented with technology and weaponry over the course of the game, transforming him into the more familiar cybernetic form he possessed as the first major boss in Borderlands 2. While not detailed in initial demos, Lynchwood sheriff Nisha, "the Lawbringer" (also introduced in Borderlands 2), and Claptrap, "the Fragtrap" (the last remaining robot of its kind as of Borderlands 2) will also be playable characters.

zMK5sMb.jpg
The storyline of The Pre-Sequel will focus on Handsome Jack and his attempt to escape his exile from the Hyperion moonbase, and capture it for himself. The main characters of Athena, Wilhelm, Nisha, and Claptrap, will begin the game as henchmen of Handsome Jack. Jack himself will have "morally good intentions" at the beginning of the story, but will slowly transform into the "horrific, evil villain he is in Borderlands 2 that seems to have enjoyed cutting people's eyeballs out with a spoon." Pitchford stated that the game's plot would explore how villains "can be morally ambiguous, doing possibly bad things for the right reasons and then have that reflect what [Handsome Jack] is doing. There are several quests in the game where literally the only narrative purpose they exist for is to show you that the bad guy you're fighting is not actually a horrible person."

bYgWQGc.jpg
Gameplay in The Pre-Sequel will remain similar to previous installments, but with the addition of new mechanics. Two new weapon types will be introduced, including various forms of laser-based weaponry, and cryogenic weaponry which can slow down and freeze enemies, who can then be smashed using a melee attack. Gravity will also have an effect on motion while on the moon, causing players to jump higher but slower, and items such as loot and dead bodies to float away. Players can use O2 kits (oxygen tanks) like a jetpack to perform double jumps, hovering, and ground slamming attacks. As with other items, different types of O2 kits can provide stat bonuses, and add elemental effects to the aforementioned slam attack.
The rumored existence of the game was first reported on April 7, 2014, and it was officially announced two days later on April 9, 2014.

The game will be released in North America on October 14 2014 and on the 17 2014 for everyone else; those who pre-order the game will also receive the DLC Shock Drop Slaughter Pit. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel will not be released on eighth-generation consoles such as PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, choosing to target the previous PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles instead. Developers cited the aforementioned ability to expand upon the existing engine of Borderlands 2 rather than having to rebuild the engine for a new console platform, and that the game would be accessible to the same consoles, and in turn, players of previous Borderlands games. Pitchford also stated that there was a possibility that the game may be sold at a lower price point than previous installments depending on its final size.

Developers: 2K Australia, Gearbox Software
Publisher: 2K Games
Distributor: Take-Two Interactive
Engine: Modified Unreal Engine 3
Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Modes: Single-player, 4 player co-op

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel could eventually come to PS4 and Xbox One, Source.
Borderlands 2, developed by Gearbox Software and released in late-2012, was one of the most successful video games in 2K's history. Speaking in February 2013, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford stated that there were no current plans for a third installment in the franchise, as the company believed that a sequel to Borderlands 2 would have to be "massive", but that "when you think of what Borderlands 3 should be... No. we don't know what that is yet. We can imagine what it must achieve, but we don't know what it is yet." The company also cited a desire to focus its attention onto new games for next-generation consoles, such as Brothers in Arms: Furious Four, Homeworld: Shipbreakers (a new game in the Homeworld franchise, which Gearbox had recently acquired in THQ's bankruptcy auction), and two entirely new properties. Despite this, the company still believed that they had not yet met the demands of fans, or even its own staff, in regards to the franchise (even with the overall success of 2 and the large amount of downloadable content that had been released), prompting the creation of spin-offs such as Tales from the Borderlands, an episodic adventure game being developed by Telltale Games, and a port of Borderlands 2 for PlayStation Vita.

A few months after the release of Borderlands 2 (and shortly after it had concluded its contributions to BioShock Infinite), Gearbox began working with 2K Australia to develop a prequel to the game which would take place directly after the events of the original. The decision to make the game a prequel to Borderlands 2 was centered around a desire to use the Hyperion moonbase (a location alluded to, and visible in Borderlands 2) as a playable location; the developent team felt that going to the moonbase in a sequel to 2 would be too "boring" for players since the relevant conflict was already resolved, and because "if we're going to go to the moonbase anyway, what if we try something completely different that people aren't expecting[?]" Pitchford noted that this setting would allow the game to address plot elements and events alluded to in the first two games that were not yet completely addressed—on the possibility that the game could introduce holes in the continuity of the franchise, he joked that they were "not the only continuity hole you could find in the story of Borderlands if you pulled it apart." He suggested that working on The Pre-Sequel could be a breakout role for 2K Australia, similar to Gearbox's own Half-Life: Opposing Force. As for the size of the game, Pitchford stated that The Pre-Sequel's playable world would be in between the size of the original and Borderlands 2.

2K Australia has performed the majority of development on The Pre-Sequel, but has worked in collaboration with Gearbox on certain aspects of the game. The studio also provided its writing staff—including Anthony Burch, lead writer of Borderlands 2—as a compliment to 2K Australia's own writers. The engine of Borderlands 2 was used as a starting point, allowing the 2K Australia team to quickly prototype and implement features on top of the existing functionality already provided by 2. Most of the new mechanics in the game were conceived entirely by the 2K Australia team.

They had also managed to defy Gearbox's previous lack of consensus on the inclusion of ice-based weaponry in the Borderlands series. While Gearbox's developers previously had concerns that ice weapons would be illogical in comparison to the other elemental weapon types (such as incendiary and acid), Pitchford excused their inclusion in The Pre-Sequel because cryogenic technology of this nature was more "natural" in the sci-fi and space-oriented setting of the game.

To facilitate personal storytelling, the four playable characters of the game will have a larger amount of dialogue than their equivalents in 2. Developers also felt that The Pre-Sequel would have more diverse humor than previous installments due to the makeup of its writing staff, and the influence of Australian comedy and culture (citing, for example, a cricket-themed side mission), so much so that the development team decided to portray the inhabitants of the moon as being like Australians themselves. Bruce Spence, an Australian actor well known for his role as the Gyro Captain in Mad Max 2 (the second film in a franchise that has been cited as an influence on the setting of Borderlands as a whole), will be among the game's voice actors–voicing a gyrocopter pilot in reference to his role from the film.
While no specific DLC pack has been announced for Borderlands the Pre-Sequel, President of Gearbox Software Randy Pitchford explained in a Developer Q&A that they've created a standard for downloadable content and that it would be great for the game. However, the teams are focused mainly on the primary game before discussing DLC further.

I'm pretty exited for BLPS. I think it may be the one game I pre-order considering it looks like a lot like BL2, and it'd be pretty hard to f*** up Borderlands.

Also, I wonder if they will put it in a tribute to Yote... That'd be so awesome.

With a bit modification, i made it better...

Actually the text is rather huge, text color doesn't match the rest of the overall color, and the font doesn't compliment the the 7S logo.

Great, I will have to take a look at this asap. I will add your link to the OP soon. Thanks for sharing!

No problem. I just saw that it was posted and came straight here, assuming it was probably already up. They show off Athena's third tree in the video, as well as some vehicle footage and extra information regarding a new character who replaces Scooter as the vehicle vendor.
