Well I came into the threads thinking I wanted a new laptop. I read some other posts and the major suggestions were to buy a cheap laptop and spend the rest on a PC.

Here's my predicament:
I'm a senior and my parents are helping me fund my next computer for college. Well my current laptop is an HP G60 and has, err, shall we say some character to it. It works, so I'm in no desperate need, but obviously I'm eager to get a new one.
My price is right around $1500, give or take about $200

I want a laptop that is better than what I have now. So perhaps a little better at gaming, but I'm not expecting much since it's not a PC.

Do you guys think it's worth it to go all out on a laptop, or can I get both for that price? If I do get both, I don't want a total piece of sh*t. Sorry if I sound like a total fool, I'm sure by now you guys are aware this is not my forte.

Thanks for any help, I appreciate it.
NEW QUESTION!!
Would any of you guys recommend getting this laptop?
I'm thinking that, and getting these upgrades
1. Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth(R)
2. 30% off 9 cell Lithium Ion Battery
3. 17.3-inch diagonal Full High Definition Anti-glare LED-backlit Display (1920 x 1080)
And possibly this; Backlit Keyboard with numeric keypad
Should I also upgrade the memory on it? Do you think its worth the price? Will it make that much of a difference in overall performance?

I would spend $400-600 on a laptop and the rest on a gaming pc that you build yourself cause its cheaper.

You can get a decent laptop for a good price, these days, just look into the specs.

Asus and Lenovo are my two names to recommend for laptops, just from experience and looking around a bit.

What would you be using the laptop for? If it's just for basic needs, e.g. word processing, Internet browsing, light gaming etc. you can find something suitable for around $600. The rest can be spent on a really nice gaming PC should you wish for one.

Yea just basic needs. The only gaming on it would be Minecraft and Age of Empires 3. Could you fellas point me in the right direction to find a laptop like that?
I would also be completely down to build a PC as well. Some help with the PC parts would go a long way as well.
Thanks

How about an ultrabook? Very portable, can last a whole school day battery-wise, and often come with an SSD. You can get a nice ultrabook with an i5 [and HD 4000 graphics which should be enough for MC and AoE] for under $700.

As for the PC, what would you be using it for, do you need peripherals (keyboard, mouse etc) and what games/applications would you be using?

Ultra book sounds nice. You know of any good ones?
I think I'll buy the laptop first. Then save more money to fund a really nice PC.

In regards to the laptop in your OP, I think you'd do just fine with going for an i5 processor as unless you're doing some heavy CPU work (rendering, a lot of multi-tasking, editing etc.) then an i7 isn't needed. For Internet browsing, media playback, word processing and some gaming, an APU would probably be best. THIS Acer Inspire will play any game just fine as the dedicated video card + integrated graphics in crossfire would be much better than HD 4000 graphics, and comes at a very attractive price. Just chuck another 4GB kit of RAM and you'd be sweet.
