I was in my design history lecture today and my professor was talking about something that I wasn't listening to but then he quoted this:

"To copy others is necessary, but to copy oneself is pathetic."
Picasso, Pablo

Thought it was kind of fitting for this game...

Now dont get me wrong, I cant wait for this game and I think it will be great but I can see the argument for it just being a copy of MW2. But then again do I really want anything different gameplay wise from MW2? Nope.

That's a rather naive comparison.

That quote isn't used in the context of this game. Why shouldn't the game be different? The graphics and engine were fine, and they've updated/removed anything they felt was necessary. People can complain all they want, but it's a different game, with a different campaign, different maps, different guns, different layout etc. It may have similarities, (Which is kind of expected considering it's a sequel...) but it's not the same.

Let us strive to improve ourselves, for we cannot remain stationary; one either progresses or retrogrades.
Mme. Du Deffand

Without improvement everything would be stuck in a rut. That phrase may apply to art where a product once created is final, however games are a totally different media. They're totally open to upgrades and improvements whereas art is created for a one time purpose. Imperfections in art are colourful little swipes at how nothing is ever as it should be, after all, art is quite romance in nature. Games, however, do not fall into the same boat in my opinion. They're created for entertainment, so the audience have a say on what the creator creates, unlike art.

Dont consider games art?

Are preforming arts considered art? If so a video game is just a play that you star in?

Then level design is an art within the game. Plus I forget who it was, think it was Roger Ebert, but he admitted video games are art. Thats good enough for me.

Obviously I was referring to art as paintings, due to them being a one time thing whereas dance, games or whatever can be recreated and built upon. If we want to continue the theme of being pedantic I could say that Roger Ebert's opinion is invalid because art is in the eye of the beholder and not a term to be generalised. A piece of music I may consider artistic may not draw the same reaction out of others.

Thanks for being so pretentious though, said without a trace of irony.

You are the one trying to generalize it to just paintings and I dont get why? I never mentioned just paintings. And it wasn't very obvious you are referring to paintings, you never once mention just paintings in your first post, you just say art. Picasso did more than just paintings so if thats where you are trying to get the paintings connection, it isn't there.

And I really dont care what you think of Ebert's opinions. I dont think I have read anything he has ever said in years and in general dont read reviews from anyone until I have made my own opinion on it first.

Art may be in the eye of the beholder but I think that it is more referring to the quality of the art, not if it is really art or not. Because art is anything that is produced using skill and imagination. I know that pretty much entitles everything but that then goes back to "in the eye of the beholder" idea.

And I dont think your last sentence really applies to this. Your trying to say video games are not art but then what you said just questions the quality of the music, not if it is art or not. My friend might not like the metal or rap I listen to but he can still admit it is art...

But now we are completely off topic. I was just trying to share something that I though some people could see a connection to. Seems a lot of people believe it is a copy so I just decided to share something for them. As I said in the original post, I dont really believe the game is a copy. Obviously it uses the same engine but thats expected, its a lot of work to design a new engine (that doesn't need to be changed) for a new game. All the maps, probably all the textures, all the weapons (design wise) have been created brand new. Thats a lot of work and obviously not a copy.

They're revising and improving the game with each successive release. It's like artists drawing drafts before doing the real thing. Or making multiple versions of a painting over time, which many of the great ones did, such as Van Gogh.

and you kinda contradict yourself in that little 'rant' on that guy. btw

Don't worry about it. I assume you reached your quota. ^_^

As long as people see the side I pointed out, I'm more than happy.

I hit my quota every day, yes I see and it makes more sense.
