Hi there, I joined this forum to hopefully find the help I really acquire. I've had this xbox original softmodded for a year now and upgraded it like 4 months ago with rocky5 disc. The xbox version is 1.1 As the manufacture date is 2002.09.13 And on softmodded dash board, it says 1.1.

My problem is that I need to upgrade the hard drive to like at least 500 gb or even 250 gb. But, problem is that I don't know what hard drives to buy or even properly how to install said drive to xbox. ( I tried following videos but they do not cover small steps and just cover major steps). So if there is a kind soul out there that can help me with choosing the right hard drive and right tutorial. I would love you for ever.

Ps: I need the upgrade for ps1 emulation and xbox original games as I had a ps1 classic 4 hours ago ( it's demise was my knuckles smashing the **** out of it as it wasn't accepting the mod and the mod kept breaking games)

Thank you

What steps are you not understanding? I believe you just need to follow an Xbox HDM tutorial. The one we have is for 1.9 and I was informed there is a 2.2 now so I haven't had time to look into it to update the tutorial.

Anyway, maybe VinnyHaw VinnyHaw can chime in.

No like, my xbox is 1.1, its just idk what hard drive to buy because a hard drive compatibility list that I found online doesn't show me what version it supports. This is my issue so apologizes when I said about not being able to follow video instructions. It's just that I don't wanna brick the xbox again like how I did to my previous one. But again, I appreciate all the help I get:smile:

There's a hdd compatibility link somewhere in the tutorials section. I'll see if I come across it again but you can probably do a search in there.

I found the list, but it's very outdated. Either the storage size is small or the drives at this point are just old.

Did you sort by date? I found a link and you had to sort by date to get all the 2019 releases  But yeah, when looking at the page initially, it looks like everything from 2005-2006 or something like that.

Get a new model desktop PC SATA hard drive. Not any possibly cheaper old refurb, OEM custom drive, etc.

Suggested Items to purchase for Hard Drive Upgrade

WD Blue 1 or 2TB HDD
Compatible IDE-to-SATA HDD adapter - I prefer either the StarTech IDE2SAT2 or DeLock 61702 adapters.
80-wire 40-pin 24" long Ultra IDE cable
Molex Power splitter only use during cloning the current hard drive to the new larger HDD with [Click here to view this link] on the Xbox itself.

Watch Rocky5's How to clone your hard drive using Chimp 261812 from start to finish and Chimp 261812 Latest Build

I've also included the written steps in my Rocky5 tutorial. He likes to talk in that video so it's likely faster to just read the steps

If you have an Xbox 1.1, you should hard mod it as it’s easy to bridge the two solder points in the two locations. Then it’s way easier to put in a new HDD and do more.

The softmod method in my Rocky5 tutorial is extremely easy, way easier than pulling a motherboard out to TSOP it.

Yep, but if and when the HDD craps out is a biggie. I only softmod if I cannot TSOP it (motherboard version 1.6), but still then I put in a chip and then it’s good. Once I went to hard mods, I never went back to soft mods. Best thing about hard mods is you don’t have to lock the drive.

But using Rocky5's Chimp makes locking it easy. I guess the only problem would be is finding a compatible hdd (lockable). If you had one laying around and it wasn't compatible, then yeah, would need a chip or TSOP. But with regards to expense, softmodding + chimp is the cheapest and quickest way to upgrade to a larger hdd. And I don't believe you have to do anything special with the bios.

It’s just as cheap to TSOP 1.0 to 1.5 boards. Solder and 28 awg wire is pretty cheap to get, as you would still have to get a 80 wire 40 pin cable, SATA2IDE adapter and the HDD. A lot of newer SATA HDD aren’t lockable, this is why I choose TSOP.
