Question MY new hard drive won't accept the update firmware please help

ok so my hdd went bad on my ps3 so i bought a new 1 tb hdd 2.5 inch sata drive and am unsure if i need to create a partition or just insert it with no partition on the hdd so i am trying the no partition method and everytime i go to update it says no applicable update data found this was a previously jailbroken and patched system so i dont know if i need a CFW or an OFW as well so that my issue thanks u for ur time in reading this and any help would be appreciated

format the new drive then put it back in your ps3 grab the lastest firmware https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/system-updates/ps3/format a usb drive now create a folder called PS3 then in that folder Create a folder named UPDATE in the update folder place the firmware update go into safe mode on your ps3 then update the system.

ok i formatted both and did the 2 folders with the update data on the usb stick and it keeps saying no applicable data found should i format the flashdrive as non bootable or just leave it how it is

how did you put the folders? they are case sensitive so its PS3>UPDATE>PS3UPDAT.PUP

whats the usb size? 4GB are best to use also make sure the USB doesn't have any flags attached to it windows 10 won't show u the flags on the usb drive you will have to get a Linux tool called gparted to see them and remove them

there was no flags attached at all
go into safe mode then press number 5 and try again after that process is complete. if you can get to the dash on the ps3 with the older drive see if the USB shows up it may be the USB drive is too big try a 4gb drive instead

I found out the problem my console is on dex but when i try to upgrade it with d-rex cfw its freezes and then i have to shut it off
by pulling the plug
