After lurking for the past few days I finally decided to make an account because the information on this is either dated, scarce, or difficult to comprehend, especially for a super noob like me.

I would like to run Linux on my Xbox 360 using the King Kong Exploit but don't know how.

Although I have found some walkthroughs using the waybackmachine and even this forum, I cannot find a complete step by step guide for using linux on your Xbox 360 LiteOn via the King Kong Exploit (in the most resourceful manner possible).

I don't want to play games on it, and I don't care about getting banned from xbox live because I have no accounts on this xbox. I just want to use my Xbox to run linux while its connected to the internet. And though most tutorials are for Gentoo, I would like to do it with Ubuntu if it is possible.

1. I have an Xbox 360 Jasper from 5/16/2009 with a LiteOn drive. (no JTAG, no RGH, no Flash)

2. I have an original copy of the King Kong Game

3. I have 2 rewritable DVD's but not sure if they are the double layer 8 GB and I have an 8 GB flash drive for moving any of the files.

I have no soldering skills or tools beyond a couple of screwdrivers and am too broke to buy any of the pieces required to flash an xbox 360 according to the tutorials I've seen.

I have read ways of people doing this via hotswap on BenQ but I do not know if it could be done with a LiteOn.

Does anyone know of an updated and comprehensive guide/tutorial for this? Maybe even a video tutorial so I can verify my work? Its 2018 so I figured there had to be SOMETHING out there on doing this easily. If anyone here can help with working links it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

What dashboard version is the console on? You need a console on 4532 or 4548 (incredibly rare).

Follow this to find your kernel/dashboard version.

From what I understand I can update my Kernel to 4532 or 4548 because mine is older. Is that true or am I mistaken? and is mine really older or am I SOL?

You cannot. If you want to run linux, you will have to RGH or R-Jtag it.

I'm confused. I cannot update the kernel or I cannot download linux? *What do you mean?

What ever it is I cannot do, is it because of my Kernel or I cannot regardless of my Kernel?

Your kernel version is too high for the king kong exploit, and you cannot just downgrade to the exploitable version.

Exploitable versions: 4532 and 4548.
Your version: 17511

Your kernel version is too high to perform the King Kong exploit.

That is because it was patched after the 4548 kernel version, and you cannot downgrade to this version as some of the EFuses have been blown (this happens when you update the console), which will prevent you from downgrading.

You can still run linux, but you will need to perform an RGH, R-JTAG, or R-JTOP exploit. All of which require soldering if you wish to do it yourself.

Edit: TEIR1plus2 TEIR1plus2 damn you're fast.

Even if it's Flashed, correct?
If you try to flash the older kernel, your console will lockup during bootup because it checks the version you're trying to load against the efuses on the cpu. A fuse is burned for each update following the king kong exploit.

Thanks guys. I appreciate it. If you have any links to decent tutorials on the easiest/cheapest way to get linux according to my specs, that are close enough to ELI5 as possible, I would be forever grateful.

I just thought of something-

I can probably borrow a soldering iron from someone but if I have to solder anyways, Is it cheaper to buy the efuses on ebay or replace the efuses with ones from another xbox? Or is it cheaper and more effective to just do a JTAG/RGH?

The only way to restore the efuses is use a different cpu, which would require a rework station to remove the old one and install the new one. The efuses are not something you can repair with a soldering iron, they're extremely tiny and inside the cpu. You can blow them, but you cannot restore them.

I blew all of the fuses on one of my consoles and am trying to get it to boot, but I'm probably going to end up throwing it out. It will not boot because some of the fuses are used for the cpu config as well.

RGH 1.2 would be the cheapest and easiest.
And I just realised I forgot to link the tutorial for RGH1.2 :sorry: .

Here you go. Probably the best tutorial for it on the internet.
And if you need a video tutorial, here is a good playlist.

Snowy Snowy You. Are. Awesome. Thank you for this. You have brought me light.

Also, thank you for explaining the eFuses as that route probably would have turned out discouraging.
I'm just trying my best to do this from scratch even though I broke my method by actually buying the game today.

This was a sad day...

I've devoted 59 of the past 72 hours on learning all of this from zero.

  • After figuring out how to take apart and clean my xbox for the first time,
  • learning about the Kong Exploit (even though all information online said linux can ONLY be accessed on the console with a JTAG/RGH),
  • Learning how to identify and flash my LiteOn with a home made probe using an on/off switch from a broken lamp (with zero electric experience),
  • buying the last copy of the correct Kong version for $10, 15 minutes before GameStop closes (just to find out that all the tutorials still existing in waybackmachine required a pirated copy anyways),

I finally hit the wall that let me know, "Although I can hack an Xbox 360 without having to do external modifications It just so happens I don't have the kind of 360 it's possible to do it on".

...So close :banghead:

But I'm excited again. This information has helped to keep me going. I'm going to binge on the tutorials. Thanks again!

What about using a Timing Attack? From what I understand it wont work for gaming but that's ok. Hard to find any existing info on it but you can pull a page from free60 about it. From what I understand, it bypasses the blown eFuses. Is that true or am I misunderstanding? Snowy Snowy TEIR1plus2 TEIR1plus2

Yeah the King Kong exploit is extremely dated. You don't need to be upset over not having a console it could be performed on.
Consoles it could be performed on are extremely rare. You'd either have to be incredibly lucky, or pay a lot of money to a collector to get one.

If you still want to have a modded console, remember that you don't have to do it yourself.
You have four different options:
  • Mod the console yourself
    • Can be somewhat expensive since you'll have to buy everything required
    • You might have a hard time if you have no soldering experience
    • But this is a really nice experience if you are (eventually?) able to get the console working
  • Buy a prebuilt console from a seller
    • Easy for sure, but likely very expensive
  • Buy a used modded console from someone
    • Can be very cheap, just have to find someone selling
(I just checked one B/S/T site, and found a phat RGH1 with a 120gb HDD and a controller on sale for 70€)
    • Check B/S/T sites, Se7enSins also has a B/S/T section
  • Send in a console to be modded
    • Depending on the price you get, this can be very worth it
    • I just opened a B/S/T website and instantly found multiple consoles under 50€. One of them was a slim with four controllers and some games for 25€.
And then add on top of that the price of sending it in for someone to be modded (I remember paying like 30€ for one send in like 4 years ago) So yeah, total price is about the same as buying the equipment to do the mod yourself, lol

Your only reasonable options are performing either the RGH, JTAG, or JTOP mod, as stated in a earlier post.
I'd recommend you forget everything else.

Thanks, I appreciate that but a big part of this is the learning experience. The last thing I would do is pay someone for something I'm trying to learn to do myself anyways.

I was discouraged because the goal was to do it without needing more than I have.
*But the Timing Attack changes that.

From the little information I'm finding, the Timing Attack doesn't require any external modifications and therefore is totally reasonable, despite the difficulty. Maybe I'm wrong about needing external hardware? I read someone in another thread on here mention an RGH basically being a timing attack but whether or not what he is talking about and what is shown on here are the same thing is what I'm trying to figure out. The Timing Attack let's you downgrade the kernel and bypass the blown fuses. Although I'm probably going to end up having to do an RGH, it doesn't mean I can't try to figure out something else until I buy the materials I need. Where there's a will, there's a way.

I appreciate your optimistic perspective though.
