Hello, I'm trying to upgrade the hard drive in my PS3 slim. The old hard drive works fine when I put it in, however when I put in the new, unformatted drive, I get a quick yellow light, then a blinking red light and three beeps. I've tried formatting the drive in NTFS and FAT32 without it working, however the hard drive works on my PC. Any help would be great.

well I know for sure it needs to be formatted to FAT32. I'm not sure why it beeps then shuts off though... I recently upgraded my PS3 hdd with a 1TB 2.5" Laptop hdd and did not experience that issue. Edit: Did you have the USB stick in the port with the Firmware you want to install?

I had the thumb drive in, it turned out to be the hard drive. I went and returned mine (a WD Blue 1TB) for a Toshiba L200 1 TB, and it worked immediately.

This may help. It seems that maybe your PS3 is near YLOD. if you are unfamiliar with the acronym it is Yellow Light of Death. It means "general hardware failure" but in most cases it is the separating of the GPU from the motherboard caused by overheating. Basically a flaw in the soldering/thermal paste.

oh ok maybe it wasn't the right drive for the PS3.
