Of course like you said there is Terraria but a lot of games are coming out like this so it's a good idea. I for one actually love Terraria and if you added in features like customization that sets it different and tacking on something new, people would most likely love it. Like you said it's not the most appealing to the eyes but function should always come before looks so it's good you have that already in perspective. If anyone does put hateful things, it is most likely people just either being jealous or just being idiots because as you said this is your first actual project. Would love seeing how this comes along.

Thank you, I really appreciate it.
Like I said, I will definitely keep this thread updated with progress. Can you elaborate on what you mean by:
if you added in features like customization that sets it different and tacking on something new

EDIT: The main thread will be edited with each update to the game I make.

I had a buddy who developed the exact same thing in Java, it worked exactly like Minecraft too. Good work so far, I hope you find the motivation to finish it.

Thank you so much! I definitely plan to. Congrats to your buddy too, how far did he take it by chance? Multi-player and everything?

What I meant is by adding in new features to crafting like how Minecraft has its mods and so does Terraria, a lot of the mods for both add a lot of better features than just the Vanilla games. I would say search into mods for both and then use those ideas either yourself or create your own.

As mentioned, USP's (Unique Selling Points) are what make games these days.
I have seen a few Minecraft redo's Terraria being one of the better ones and I LOVE FTB things.
Have the different blocks/ores
Have different ways of creating, be it by machine or new recipes
etc etc

I realise this is your first and you are InDev at the moment, but always have a focal point, which im sure you do, but I think a "modded" style would reel people in.
But saying that, a simplified version would, as in Minecraft.
So as you progress look into 2 versions (long way in the future yet I know)

Best of luck and i will be watching the progress

Hm, never really thought about a sort-of "modded" version but great idea  that is quite a ways down the road but I will definitely keep that in mind. Thanks a lot!

If you'd like any help with the graphics hmu with your skype and I'll do it for free, can also work on the programming as well if you'd like as I have experience with creating my own games in Java.

On-Topic: Looking good so far, do you have any planned features that'll set it apart from other games like it?

Thank you for the offer, I will definitely let you know
And I haven't necessarily thought that far ahead, as stated above already. I am definitely keeping it in mind though.

Hey guys!

So, after around 2 months of paused development because of a serious lack of motivation, I began development once again around a week ago. So, if anyone is interested on updates, here are a few:

  • The game has been renamed to ElementsOnline. (It will still include a single-player version.)
  • It is definitely to be more than just a "Minecraft-2D-Remake." It's going to have some sort of leveling system, skills, stats, much like a normal RPG but it will also have other things, I just haven't thought all of the possible ideas.
  • I have created an organization called, TheGreyLab. Currently, it is just me as it is new and TGL will be producing more than just ElementsOnline. If you'd like to join, add me on Skype: xolitudemodz.
  • More to come soon...
I'm very exhausted so this is all I have at the moment :3

Is this really your first game? You are doing very good! Most people do not follow through with their first games.

Here are some royalty free 2d minecraft assets. Use them if you wish.
DL
Vt (Its just images and spritesheets, but what ever)

You should add a feature that allows people to create mods in Lua.
I've given it thought. I wasn't sure how far I was actually going to go with this project to be honest, mainly because it was just meant to be a learning experience. I was just going to get all of the basic essentials done which does include some sort of client/server-side mod/plugin creation with either Lua or C# and then make it all open-source.

Just a couple of updates:

  • A very basic game launcher is almost complete.
  • A website w/launcher login authentication is in development.
  • Basic game updating is in development.
  • A MainMenuGUI is in development. (The game's main menu, obviously.)
Honestly, I think once I get the login authentication and main menu out of the way, I may jump straight to multiplayer server creation and authentication to get that out of the way. The game already has basic single-player functionality.

I will post a few screenshots when all is playable.

Please keep in mind: All of the code is boiler plate and will be for a long time. I'm just making everything playable.

Update:

  • Almost finished with the launcher, still have yet to work on security and game initialization.
  • The authentication server (for the launcher logon) is just about done. Upon successful logon, the server updates the following fields in the account's row: last_login(timestamp), login_guid(32-char string). (Not sure what the GUID will be used for yet other than multiplayer connectivity.)
  • Began work on an updater. This will run before the launcher starts and will download all of the necessary game files from a URL specified in the URL key/value of the config.properties file.
I want to allow full customization and very little privatization. This will later allow people to download patches, misc. game files, scripts, etc,. all through the updating process from any given server. The authentication server is still a bit buggy when it comes to SQL/user errors, those will be fixed soon.

So, pretty much. I could create modified files for your game, and hack the **** out of it...and everyone would have the ability to do this?
Yeah, doesn't seem like a great plan.
And what SQL errors are you getting?
How are you handling the login? Are you using a framework or what?

Client-side, yeah, you could go about doing this. There's nothing stopping you. Server-side, you will essentially be stopped from doing a lot of this. You can do that with just about any game, it's just more difficult when it comes to other languages such as C++.
And no, no specific framework or anything as such. All written from scratch for my own liking at the moment.

Not to spam with a second reply, but in reply to Hiyper as-well, I'm just creating a simple project to show people what they can do when they first start out if they choose to use Java, hence why I am making it fully open-source. It's meant to show people some options they could have. I'm not, in any way, going for the best, maximum security game here. It's just something simple to fill my time and to hopefully explain a few things. Eventually, I'll be making a walkthrough series on YouTube.

So, no need to be so hostile.

EDIT: I call it the "Seed."
