Hey guy's basicly i just got given this faulty xbox and it's got a real problem trying to read disks.
It's been hot swapped so its all open ect, when i try to boot up a game it basicly attempts to read the disk for 2-3 seconds and then gives up, the lazer doesn't seem to move either i worked out when i tap the back of the disk tray when it's reading the disk it sometimes actually boots up.
considering i got this 360 for free is great but i would like to sort it out so it works without a problem, if anyone could provide any insight as to how to fix or what this problem is i would really appreciate it, thank you.

First of all, NEVER hot swap.
Ever. It's the equivalent of a TOWEL TRICK, but to your DVD Drive. Just don't do it.

Second, it sounds like your worm motor is toast. You need a new one.

Is the worm motor on the cd drive? is it the motor that allows the lazer to slide?

Ok so i could get a replacment cd drive and reflash it?

You wouldn't be hotswapping if you knew how to flash.
But, you can either replace the worm motor, or replace the drive. To replace the drive, you need to take the DVD Key off of your current drive and SPOOF it onto another drive, be sure to use the same model of drive though, otherwise you're likely to be banned.

I dont think the drive would even work if it wasn't the same type, thanks for your help bro.
P.s this isn't my account and that wasnt my xbox it was just to noobie of a situation to post on my account lol, bit embarrassing as i really can't stand hotswapping ****, 99% are fanboy's that can't afford a jtag (which they only want for being a *** online) and have to break there xbox jsut to host world at war zombies.

You don't need a JTAG for WaW lobbies. You only need a flashed xbox.
