Heat sink sits on top of the CPU. Obviously. When I went to remove the heat sink from my 2002 Dell (hadn't been opened before), the CPU was.... well, I guess the best way I'd put it is, "half welded onto the heat sink" to the point where I had to gently pry it off for about half an hour before I finally got it.

I'm not familiar with computers this old, but I figure it can't be too different from today... BUT just in case....

Do I apply thermal paste to the CPU before I reinstall the heat sink? Or is that not necessary on hardware this old?
