Update

March 1st 2015:
I'll help when I can when someone posts in this thread. But please realize that this tutorial is nearly 4 years old. While the information in here is still up to date and will help you in 99.9% of situations, my help may not be that high. For the most part I'll just tell you to start everything over and go slower your second time around. Please post in here though, I still receive notifications when you do so and I'll jump in when I can.

Do not ask me how to get the drive keys from either a phat or slim xbox. You can go to the Xbox 360 Support section for that. I can only help you adjust your drive key after you already have it, and through every step of the x360key installation.

View the updates and errors before asking questions. I may have already answered your question.
I understand that you may want to pm me with questions, but that will not make me answer anything faster than if you just posted the question in here. The more posts and views in this thread, the more popular it will become on search engines and to this site. So please, ask your question in here, I check this thread everyday and will not pass up your question. Thank you.

  • A quick explanation of what the xkey is. It's a ODDE (optical disc drive emulator) that will allow you to play iso's from a external hdd or usb drive. So you will make a backup of your game, insert the .iso file into a memory source of your choosing, and you can play them on your xbox without needing to modify or "hack" your xbox. A dvd drive is not needed to run the xkey, as long as you can obtain the firmware from it, you can use the xkey without having a dvd drive installed.
  • When you receive the xkey, you will have firmware 1.01. I would highly suggest that you scroll down to the "errors" section of this thread, and follow the tutorial on the "corrupted SD card" and use the 1.06 SD Image. That image will create the partitions in your SD card that will prevent it from corrupting as easy. And it will also make the updating process easier. When you open the file, you will notice 3 .img files in it. I explain what each one does under the download file.
  • This page has been made with mine and the works of others. This is to be a "1 stop shop" for all members looking for help with their xkey needs.

Version 01.11 Beta2 - http://www.mediafire.com/?5awb7g7qfi3d4f2

This is for people who have received the new dae.bin when connected to XBL or have the latest Dash. Everyone else, be aware you lose support for older XGD2/AP25 games and gain very little

We have now dropped support for CFW AP25 replay sectors and XK style dae.bin processing. You can delete the dae.bin file from your HDD

The good:
XK uses a profile of the game disk to calculate the correct response to any AP25 challenge. This means that once you have profiled a disk you can forget about dae.bin updates since you can always give the correct response to any challenge

The bad:
XK uses a profile of the game disk .... Which means you need to have a profile of the disk. We are lucky right now, all the new XGD3 games can be supported with a single disk profile. Older XGD2 AP25 games are more diverse and in a lot cases you will have to make your own. These can be added to the /games directory and will be read by XK as required - just like the old dae.bin. Tools will be made available shortly that will allow anyone to make their own disk profiles

Note: If there isn't a profile available the game will refuse to load with the msg "invalid game iso". That means most of the older XGD2/AP25 games will not work for a while. Non AP25 games are unaffected by this change and will work normally

This build has profiles for
-All XGD3 games to date (0C3DF524599094E6CB87ECC8-F87A804E)
-COD:MW2 (41560817)
-Black Ops (41560855)

How to play multidisc games without the remote
Firmware 1.23 (and up) brings the ability to swap discs via the Media / Audio Menu of the xBox Dash. You MUST have MENUISO=Y set in your xkey, cfg for it to work

This is what I did when I was playing a game and it asked me to swap discs:

1. Press eject when prompted for new disc
- WAIT for "wrong disc" message appears and click OK
2. Click home button on controller
3. Go right to media
4. Click "select music"
5. Click "current disc"
6. Press right and select your hdd
8. Select desired disc
9. Press eject when it states "eject try to load.mp3"
10. Press controller home button
- If auto play is on in your xbox settings there should be no need to press the home button

If you selected the wrong disc by mistake
- click ok on wrong disc
- start from step 1

How to Set up and Operate ISOMenu

So the ISOMenu is a way to select your games from your console, instead of using the xkey remote. To use this menu, you must follow these steps:

1. Open up the .cfg file that you obtain from the updates in Notepad
2. Edit the line "ISOMENU=N" to "ISOMENU=Y"
3. Apply the .cfg file to your sd card as you normally would while updating the xkey

How to apply pictures to your sd card for use with the ISOMenu (Not required)
1. Find a picture of the game your looking for (must be under 200kb)
- I will suggest Free Covers
2. Give the picture the same name as the game it is intended for
- Halo 3.iso
Halo 3.jpg
- Red Dead Redemption.iso
Red Dead Redemption.jpg
3. Put the .jpg in the same folder as the .iso

Now to operate the ISOMenu

1. Start your xbox
2. When your HDD has been found by the remote, open the DVD tray
3. The remote will now read "ISO MENU" and your xbox will read as "Mixed Media Disc"
4. Go to "My Pictures". With the newest XBL update, you must hit the dashboard button and launch "My Pictures" from in there
5. Select "Current Disc" then your external source that has your games on it.
6. Find your game and select it.
7. Now hit the dashboard button and go "home"
8. Hit the X or Y button (depending on your dashboard version) and your game will launch

Video tutorial on how to operate the ISOMenu
(NOTE: Recommended not to use this. M$ can now detect it. Just use the remote, MUCH SAFER)

How to use DVDMenu
Version 1.20Beta required
What is the XKey dvdMenu?
The XKey DVD menu is an alternative isoMenu. It allows a user to select a game to load by loading a premade ISO file. The ISO is generated using a Microsoft Windows application (sorry no Linux yet) Only 99 ISO files are supported, using more than this will crash the app at this time.

Why have a premade ISO?
As you will soon see creating a DVD iso takes time (and that’s with a fast CPU and lots of memory). To create a iso file on a smaller device would take hours, that’s one long boot time!

What’s wrong with the current isoMenu?
Short answer: Nothing
Long answer: The current menu works great, however it can be a little hard for some people (and young kids) to remember how to load picture viewer select the file etc. It was my aim to find a quicker and easier way to load games for my kids, and thanks to TA he helped me come up with dvdMenu

Why only support 99 games?
This is a limitation of how the menu is currently made and mapped. This is being worked on!

Why uses DVD Style at all, why not make you down software to create a DVD menu?
Creating a dvd menu is no simple task. DVD Styler does a great of doing it and is cross compatible, meaning in feature the XKey dvdMenu app could be made to work on other systems

I don’t like the resolution of the DVD Menu created and would like to change it to HD…How?
You can’t! Dvd specifications are clear as to what resolutions are supported and HD is not!

But I thought the Xbox supported HD DVD’s?
While the Xbox does have software to play HD DVD’s an external player is required. If anyone has gotten this to work with the internal DVD drive please let me know, I would love to use this instead!

What are all these XML files now on my HDD?
The XML files are now used to store game information, such as game title, banners and covers. The XML file can be used by other solutions such as the wifi website interface.

Can I delete the XML files?
Yes (as long as you don’t use it for other solutions), however all information would need to be downloaded again. It is better to have the files and not re-download every time.

I don’t like the layout, how can I change it?
It is possible to create custom themes; however this thread will not deal with this information.

DVD Styler Crashed on step 2… Help!!!
This can be for 3 reasons,
An invalid template has been generated.
DVD Styler has a bug
A random crash
For each of the problems first thing to try is “try again”. If it fails again and again then it could be a 1 or 2. Post your log info and dvdtemplate.dvds file from the installation folder somewhere and post a link on the form. If you have time, try and see if a particular ISO is causing the issue.

My installation folder is empty!
This is a windows user account control problem, reinstall and using admin rights (right click run as administrator)

I want to choose my own game details or cover/banner
You can add your own title inside any game XML file. You can override your menu images using
Banners: {ISONAME}-banner.png
Covers: {ISONAME}-cover.jpg
If you want to add a trailler you can use: {ISONAME}.wma

Known Issues:
•When starting the DVDMENU you may have to manually go back to the main menu
•Games in the menu are ordered by ISO name not game name
•If you don't have permissions for the folder the app crashes- ensure you have both read and write permissions

Instructions
1.Make sure your xkey.cfg has MENUDVD=Y
2.Extract DvdMenu.zip
3.Install
4.Launch
5.Select drive with games installed
6.Click if you want to download info from Xbox.com
7.Click if you want to download trailers from Xbox.com
8.Click Step 1 (Scan)
9.If step 1 compete ok start step 2 (Create)
10.If step 2 is ok start step 3(Copy), if step 2 fails try again.
11.If step 3 completes

How to use wireless adapter
Requirements: wifi dongle
xkey remote
usb hub

Step 1: Update your xkey to firmware 1.12
Step 2: modify your .cfg file
SSID=YOUR_NTWORK_BROADCAST_ID (the name of your wireless receiver)
#PSK=YOUR_WPA_PASSKEY (note, you must delete the # in front of PSK)
KEY=YOUR_DONGLES_UNIQUE_KEY (when you order your wifi dongle, you will receive a special key, copy that key here)
MENUISO=N (you cannot use the ISOMENU with the wifi dongle, it must be turned to N)

Step 3: Update your sd card with the new .cfg file
Step 4: Plug your xkey remote, external harddrive/usb drive, and wifi dongle into your usb hub
Step 5: If you entered the information into the .cfg file correctly, your xkey remote will read "Network OK" and if its wrong, it will read "Network Key Invalid"
Step 6: If it reads "Network OK", then you will go to the "about xkey" section on your xkey remote, and scroll down to where you will see "SSID" and "IP". The SSID will be the name of the network you are signed into, and the IP will be the address that you will enter into your internet browser.
Note: If you are going to use your smart phone for the internet browser, then you must be signed into the network.
Step 7: Use your controller and open the dvd tray.
Step 8: Using your internet device, follow the on screen navigations to select your game.

How to Operate the Remote

The first thing your going to want to do is open your dvd tray. You can do this by hitting the "open tray" button on your xbox
30di4r7.jpg

The remote will now read "Tray:Open"
14cy4vt.jpg

Scroll up and click on "Select Game"
spg17p.jpg

Even with your hdd plugged in, you may get this screen saying "0 HDD"
25syio6.jpg

Simply disconnect your hdd and plug it back in until you get it saying "1 HDD". Now enter your harddrive
v5a7t1.jpg

The next screen will say "360" followed by the name of your game
20hlrug.jpg

Note:
If you turn on your console by using the "eject" button, then your key will be put on "passthru" mode. you cannot operate the key at that time. passthru mode is for your dvd drive. going in passthru mode will allow you to use your dvd drive and access xbl safetly. turning on your console using your controller or the power button will give put you to "emulation" mode, that activates the keys' capabilities.

How to update the xkey using your HDD

1. Extract the two files "rootfs" & "uImage" (this is referring to the files that you will extract from the updated folder you will obtain from the official website)

2. Add the two files to the root folder of a Flash Drive or HDD. (Make sure to eject the drive properly from the PC, it may otherwise cause corrupt files)

3. Connect the Flash drive or HDD to your xk3y remote and wait for the xk3y to start the update.
3.1 The remote LED will now display "UPDATING - PLEASE WAIT" for about 35 seconds. (Do not turn off your XB360 or disconnect the remote while updating)

4. Once the update is completed, the LED will display "UPDATE COMPLETE - RESET XBOX" Reboot your xbox and the xk3y should now be updated to the latest firmware.

5. That's it! Continue to enjoy using xk3y with the new features!

Errors

FPGA Error
This video was created by Se7enSins user tw1st3d n1ps and will explain to you how to fix the FPGA Error

AP25 Error

You may notice that if you try and play a AP25 game that you get a error "AP25 error, reset xbox". Now there are two ways of fixing this.
1. Updating your dashboard to anything higher than 2.0.12599.0
or
2. Adding this "dae.bin" file (http://www.mediafire...838z561dv58zswz) to the games folder in your hdd. i.e. USB:/games/dae.bin

Recovering from a Corrupt SD Card
What you need:
-USB Image Tool (Here http://www.alexpage.de/usb-image-tool/)
-A XK SD card image file
-SD card image 1.06 (will apply new partitions to sd card.) (added the images separately below)
http://www.filefactory.com/file/6bek71ep80lj/n/1.06_SDImages.rar

-Type A - http://www.mediafire.com/?67u33pl1fv45rbi
-Type B - http://www.mediafire.com/?8r2wdghtuqkguxy
-Type C- http://www.mediafire.com/?1qmhaeg6l4mx3b9

Type C for original SD with a green dot on it.
Type B for not original 128mb SD
Type A for SD >128mb. (1gb,2gb,4gb etc.)

Getting ready:

-Unzip USB Image Tool to a directory on your Hard Disk.
-Unzip the XK SD card image file into the same directory.
-A micro SD card, preferably the 128MB card that came with XK but if this is not working you can use any micro SD card you have available

Writing the image:

-Plug your SD card into a USB card reader, plug the card reader into your PC. Note the drive letter Windows assigns to it
-Run the USB Image Tool (on Vista & 7 be sure to run it as Administrator)
-Make sure the USB Image Tool is in "Device Mode"
-Select the SD card from the list in USB Image Tool
-Click the "Restore" button in USB Image Tool
-A FileOpen Dialog will appear, select the XK SD card image file you unzipped previously
-Wait a few seconds for USB Image Tool to do its thing
-Eject/Safely Remove the SD card in explorer

You now have a factory fresh micro SD card with XK FW version 01.02 ready to use, add your firmware/dummy.bin file and test in your XK.

So this error appears with the Xkey symbol and your current firmware showing on the remote. You cannot pass this screen if this error appears, but it is very simple to fix in only 1 step.

Step 1: Re-check the connections with the xkey pcp board inside the xbox.

Finishing Xbox Update after its been started
to avoid this error at all, simply update your xbox before launching any games.
If you accidentally carry out a xbox360 system update from a game that was loaded from your XKEY you might find that you when you reboot your xbox for the update to be applied you have a error that stops you loading in to your xbox360 dashboard.
System Update Stopped

Can't read the update from the disc. Please reinsert the disc to
continue the update

if the problem persists, visit xbox.com/support

Status Code:

307D-3CD6-2800-0F00-C000-0034

The status code might be a little different but what is important is look at the second block of data, in the above example 3CD6 is the important bit of information that you need this is the update that was trying to be applied. The version number is in HEX and you have to use a calculator to convert it from HEX in to a decimal value. To do this on windows open up calculator (Start run and enter Calc and click on OK) Once in calculator click on the drop down menu called view and click Programmer on the left side click on the ratio button that says Hex and enter the second block of data (in the above error it would be 3CD6). Now click on the the ratio button that says Dec ( this converts the Hex value to a Decimal value) 3CD6 now becomes 15574. This is the version of the system update that is trying to be applied. Use your favorite search engine and find a copy of this system update and download it.

The update will come in a .rar or zip format unpack the content to your pc. There will be a single folder called $systemupdate and in that folder there will be many files. You need to make sure that you copy the folder $systemupdate to the root of a USB thumb drive/pen drive/stick . Thie drive has to be formatted in fat32 plug the drive in to the Xbox 360 (do not plug it in to the xkey) Now reboot the xbox and it should find the USB thumb drive/pen drive/stick and apply the update.

It will then boot in to the xbox 360
dashboard and you should now be able to load the game from your xkey with out any issues.

Information straight from the xk3y team

HOW IT WORKS
x360key consists of 2 parts, a motherboard and a remote.

The motherboard connects to the SATA bus inside the Xbox 360, and sits between the drive and the Xbox 360 motherboard. x360key is a full-fledged computer system running embedded Linux. It is capable of many things such as
- Emulating the Xbox 360 DVD drive
- Reading USB hard drives and other USB media with various file systems
- Updating itself and other hardware from USB media
- Communicating with the remote and other external USB devices
- And a lot more! (embedded Web server and Wifi connectivity for example)

The remote is a simple yet stylish piece of hardware that features an OLED display and 3 buttons. It connects to the x360key motherboard via a high speed USB2 connection. It also has USB for connecting USB hard drives and other devices. The OLED and buttons are used to control various aspects of x360key. It is also used for browsing attached USB media devices and launching games.
FAQ
Configuring xKey - Fats

xKey requires a dump of the original firmware from your drive. This is copied to the xKey's SD card, when the xKey boots the firmware file its analysed, the drive type is identified and the drive key etc. are extracted.
If you have CFW

You should have a backup of the OFW (or all the information to recreate one) and it is this file that is used to configure xKey. There is no need to reflash your drive with OFW.
If you have a stock drive

a dump must be obtained using available tools (we recommend the Maximus Lizard 360).
Configuring xKey - Slims

xKey requires the file set (dummy.bin etc.) that can be created with available tools, these are copied to the xKey's SD card. When the xKey boots, the files are analysed, the drive type is identified and the drive key etc. are extracted.
If you have CFW

You should have a backup of the required files and they are used to configure xKey. There is no need to reflash your drive with OFW
If you have a stock drive

a dump must be obtained using available tools (we recommend the Maximus Lizard 360).
Firmware Dumping

At launch xKey can't dump the drive firmware. Updates, planned for shortly after release, will allow xKey to perform this task for you. There is no need to flash your drive and 0225+ owners can enjoy all the benefits of xKey without the hassle of swapping PCBs or waiting for an unlock hack

Official Interview with x360Key main developer

by x360key UK on Monday, July 4, 2011 at 1:57pm

Interview to the x360Key main developer: the product will let you play all your Xbox 360 games from any USB drive! Exciting stuff indeed. Lets get this thing going, enjoy!

Q - What products have the x360Key Team developed in the past?
X360Key, Wode, Wiikey, Drivekey, d2pro, xenoGC, Qoob, Crystal Chip, Aladdin XT/XenoFX series mod chips for Xbox 1.

Q - How long has x360Key been in development now?
Approximately 6 months.

Q - Will x360Key work with all Xbox 360 consoles, including Slim?
Yes and as new drive versions appear we will add support for them too.

Q - How do you install x360Key, is it easy?
Very easy, it's Plug 'n' Play, if you can dump the firmware from your drive then you can install the X360key.

Q - Both PS3 and Wii software backup loaders have compatibility problems with some game titles when loading from hard drive, due to firmware version requirements or protection in general, how is x360Key in that regard?
This is where drive emulations really come into their own, because the console sees a real drive with a real disk inserted there is no need for any patching or hacking. Everything 'just works' as normal.

Q - In relation to x360Key; what exactly is the Xbox 360 DVD drive needed for?
The X360key offers two modes, emulation & passthru. In emulation mode the drive is not required at all, in passthru mode the drive works as normal.

Q - Does the Xbox 360 DVD drive need any custom firmware flashed to work with X360key?
No, quite the opposite in fact. You need a dump of the original drive firmware to configure X360key. The good news is that's all you need to configure X360key.

Q - How safe is x360Key on Xbox Live compared to iXtreme?
While we take every care to accurately emulate the XBox's drive we do not recommend using X360key with XBL at launch. Shortly after launch we will release updates that address this.
Also, plenty of people have been banned while using CFW and there are still issues even with the latest iXtreme. For example, in order to pass the new Slim FW checks a lot of data has to be swapped around (C4E's so called 'rootkit'). This takes time and the checks take a lot longer to perform than they would on a stock drive. In the worst case it takes CFW takes 5 times longer to perform the check (15 seconds instead of 2-3). If MS have noticed this then it is quite possible that every Slim owner using CFW has already been marked for a ban.
By comparison X360key features a powerful ARM9 CPU that can perform the FW checks *faster* than the real drive running stock FW. We have the horsepower & the storage capacity to handle anything the future brings.

Q - How will the new XGD3 disc format (eg. Halo Reach) be handled by x360Key, any special backup considerations?
We do not anticipate any problems with XGD3, game ISOs are stored on HDD and are not limited by the capacity of a DL DVDR. X360key supports any number of HDDs upto 2 TB in size.

Q - Regarding backups in general, most gamers use abgx360 to verify their backup ISO images, is that still recommended with x360Key?
abgx360 verifies that the ISO is an accurate backup of a game disk. Whether an ISO is burned to a disk or used by X360key it must be an accurate backup. For this reason gamers should continue to abgx360 to verify their ISOs.

Q - Besides official updates, are there any features of the x360Key that will be open for the user to customize?
We have no plans at this time.

Q - For lazy guys like me, will there be any possibility to select games from the comfort of a sofa?
We do, however, have plans for wireless control of X360key.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! Wow, you probably don't know how much you saved my *** with this tutorial. I managed to f*** up my SD because it never completed updating to 1.04, just continually displayed "UPDATING, PLEASE WAIT" so I was forced to turn it off. Your recovery steps I found are exactly what I needed. Thanks again!

No prob, but credit goes to who found that out, I added their name to the bottom of it...but this is what I heard, now I haven't tried it yet, but I will this weekend. Delete the trash folder that came on the sd card. Apparently those are just files left over from the factory and are not needed. Apparently that's the reason it wont update for a lot of people. So imma delete it for when 1.05 is released, and see if it updates right.

Great tutorial, man! I wasn't aware that x360keys were this awesome. I just thought they helped you flash an Xbox or something. I'm debating getting one. How difficult is the installation? Like, when it comes to doing stuff with the motherboard and whatnot? Is there a possibility of f*cking up my Xbox? From the tutorial, it seems pretty straightforward.
Also, this works on any retail Xbox, correct?

What all is necessary to actually get the dump from my drive?

there's multiple ways to get the dump. you can check this part the forum and try to find a tutorial for your own dvd drive:

http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/forum/90-firmware-hack-tutorials/

first though, find out what drive you have

http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/Xbox_360_DVD_Drive_Comparison.htm

what i did was bought the maximus 360 lizard. it's 100 dollars, but the easiest way to get the dump off any xbox

the installation is very easy, everything i did in that video was from start to finish. just "plug and play" essentially. no, your xbox will not get f***ed up. there's a possibility to "brick" the sd card, yes, but there's a tutorial up above to show you how to fix it. i've messed my sd card up once, and followed that tutorial and it's good as new. it will work for any fat xbox, yes. follow this guide to see if it'll follow any slim, as of now, it won't. but the xk3y team is always coming up with updates and their working on making every xbox compatable.

Its very worth it. I recommend it highly. Being able to download games. Not needing a .dvd file. Not having to buy vertbatim dvds. It really is as good as it seems. The best part is not having to worry about firmware updates. And its so much safer than having a custom firmware on a dvd drive, because it emulates the original firmware, not a custom one. Can u hit the nominate tutorial button haha. And have others do the same.
