Just got a new router hooked up and i can't connect to 192.168.2.1 to customize my settings so i'm wondering if i need to hook up my router to my computer with the ethernet cable to access 192.168.2.1

If it's the first time you're trying to access the router, then yeah, you most likely need a fixed connection.

Besides, are you sure it's located at 192.168.2.1 ? Not every router is.

From what I've experienced, it's usually 192.168.1.1, but there are definitely others.

That might not be your routers control panel IP. It should say what it is somewhere in the routers instructions.

try
192.168.1.1
192.168.2.1
etc..

Okay, none of these answers are very good(sorry guys..)

So here you go:


Press win + r and type CMD, press enter

Type ipconfig /all
and press enter


Now, you have to make sure you know what type of connection your using, wifi or ethernet..In my case im using wifi (if your using ethernet it will most like be called LAN Network Adapter or something)

Where it says Default Gateway is my routers ip address, so i would type http://192.168.4.1 to get to my router

This way you can always find your router without knowing it at all, or if you have no physical access to it. If your using Linux, read the post below this one, because its the same as Mac

If you are on a mac open terminal and type 'route -n get default' and it will show this
