The GTX 770 will outperform the 280X.

Also I personally prefer Nvidia for better drive support.

Personally I'd recommend the 280x, because you'll be getting roughly the exact same performance you'll be pulling with a 770, and for a cheaper price.

Edit: Furthermore, if you're gaming above 1080p resolution (while I wouldn't recommend either of these cards for that) of the two the 280x would outperform at, say, 2560x1440p for example. At 1080p these cards are really rather identical.

The GTX 770 will outperform the 280X.

Also I personally prefer Nvidia for better drive support.

I looked in to the current price for each card, and it seems as though right now the 770 is only $20 more than the 280x. So, I'd actually say go with the 770. You *will* get better driver support. However if you're gaming above 1080, stick to the 280x.

I use 2 monitors so will a 280x be better?

If you're running 2x monitors at 1920x1080p, I'd take the 770. If you're running 2x monitors at, say, 2560x1440p, I'd choose the 280x. I'd assume you're running at 1920x1080p.

So does that mean the 280x will be better in the long run if I ever upgrade to 1440p?

Technically, yes, realistically, no. Let me explain; The 280x *will* perform better at higher resolutions, however, at resolutions higher than 1920x1080p, neither of these cards will perform very well. These aren't really good enough cards to perform extremely well at anything higher than 1920x1080p. These cards will reach their bottleneck far before the performance becomes "good" enough to create a comparison between the two.

As an example, a 280x may run at 20 FPS at 2560x1440p, and the 770 may run at 15FPS, but the underlying thing is, you're still playing with sub 30FPS framerates (if you're lucky.) so it's a point of diminishing returns, because while it will outperform the 770 at that resolution, it still won't give you good performance; You'd have to buy a better card for that.

280x is equal performance to the 770 but runs better at higher resolutions/multimonitors and also supports mantle.

If you care about shadowplay and gameworks the 770 is your thing but since Intel is adopting mantle thats guna be a huge plus for Mantles adaption for mainstream gaming.

I couldn't recommend the 770 due to its price tag and how well mantle is working out.

To put this in perspective how good mantle works on my 8320 with my 260x running the Thief Benchmark I get 43FPS on DirectX and 57 with Mantle if I turn AA down to 8x instead of 16 I keep 60 FPS.

The 280x is better for 2 monitors even at just 720p its comparable in single monitor for 1080p.

For future purposes the extra video ram on the 280x will be a big factor for right now they both offer similar performance its more if you want mantle or shadowplay.

Wasn't aware it would perform better in a multi-screen environment, thanks for that.

More VRam is important whenever more pixels are going above 1080p or multiple monitors

1080p Pixels 2,073,600
720p Pixels 921,600

So 1080p is about double the pixels of 1080p but the GPU splitting to provide power to 2 separate 720p monitors will be more taxing then 1 single 1080p more video ram alleviates lots of this as it can store more things.

I doubt anyone still uses 720p anymore but for future sake I still say 3+ gb of vram is a good call. I have a single monitor myself and a 2gb 260x I went with the 2gb edition because I plan on a 1440p monitor in the future and 1gb wont do crap there.

There is a 780 that comes with 6gb of vram I gotta say that is pretty impressive there that vram is enough to run 1440p or multiple monitors greatly.

I would go for gtx 770 (i have it so ill be a bit bias)

-Nvidia propietary tech in games like physx
-better driver support (imo)
-shadowplay albeit in beta but still works well

Worth spending more for physx alone if you're a graphic whole like me

The problem with mantle is that, its not adopted mainstream and is in just few select titles which leads to my second point, it helps boost fps in **** gpus/apus, if you get a high end gpu from first time, its useless and with high end gpu, you can get high fps and settings regardless of mantle or not.

Mantle shouldn't be an argument here unless he was buying a r7 250, especially not a potential r9 280x

I'd go for the 280x.

AMD drivers aren't bad. They're not quite as quick to release as Nvidia, but there's still reliable support from AMD.

PhysX is nice from Nvidia, but not every game has support for it.

The main reason I'd say go with the 280x is the 3GB VRAM. Unless you're opting for the 4GB 770, the 3GB would suit you better as higher-end AAA titles continue to push the bar graphically. 2GB is still sufficient, but if you're wanting the most from those Ultra settings, the more head room you have, the better. Also, if you're into graphical mods (Skyrim, GTA, and Watch Dogs comes to mind), that extra gig of VRAM is going to come in quite handy.

I love my 780. However, if there had been a 290x in stock when I was in the market for a new card, I would of gotten it instead for the 4GB VRAM. Either way you go, you'll be just fine; but IMO, the AMD route would be a better path to take.

Mantle can help higher end cards just not as much and its getting better as it develops.

Some times its miniscule
Mantle-Battlefield-4-MP1-635x309.jpg

Other times its large

Mantle is still growing and since Intel has agreed to adopt it (AMD will give it to them once its out of beta) it will even become more mainstream.

I have a lower end card the 260x but I gain 50% performance in Theif on max settings with mantle from 43 frames to 60.

Higher end cards probably won't gain that much benefit but do gain benefit.
