EDIT:

So, my ISP is Virgin Media in the UK and I'm using the SuperHub3 and every time I try and connect to the 5ghz wireless network, it connects but will NOT give me a valid IP thus I can't use any Internet functions or use the PSN.

Anyway, after Googling a lot I found out it's something to do with my 5ghz width. if it's set to 20/40/80 - it doesn't give me an IP. if it's set to 20mhz only, it gives an IP and the Internet is usable.

So I thought I'd try with an old router and setting the 5ghz width to 20/40 (it's an old router, doesn't have the 80mhz) and it works perfectly fine.

So I'm guessing my Virgin Media SH3 doesn't like my PS4. I have a PS4 Slim, and two PS4 Pro's, they're all the same. However, if I use my XB1S (I have two of them too) I can connect fine and have no issues with getting an IP.

I've tried resetting my router, factory resetting, rebooting. everything you could think of, I have tried.

It's NOT a Wi-Fi range problem as I can CONNECT it just doesn't give me an IP making the connection useless.

Anyone else getting this or know of a way to fix it without buying more hardware?
Should I leave it on 20mhz? will the speed be affected?

Cheers.

EDIT 1: I have also tried changing the HDD and re-installing the PS OS and it's exactly the same. I'm on the latest available version that is 6.72.

EDIT 2: My router and PS4 are in the same room, moving them closer to each other does nothing. still get the same problem.

Bump.

Googling and other people are having the same issue. I'm forced to use 2.4ghz which is a lot slower.

I've tried wiping my hdd and re-installing the OS.

I'm on 6.71.

I can only connect to my 5ghz WiFi when my width is set to 20mhz, as soon as I change to 20/40/80mhz I can't connect to PS plus or use the internet.

Anyone else getting this? What can I do to solve it?

PS: I'm on the latest update.
Out of curiosity. Have you tried moving your router?

5ghz doesn't reach nearly as far as 2.4ghz and has a lot more trouble going through walls and whatnot. Especially if you have an older house.

For example, the house I'm in rn is only about 1000sq feet and my 5ghz band doesn't reach the back room reliably unless I put a router in the back half of the house.

The router is in the same room as my PS4, I have a Slim PS4 and two PS4 Pro's and they're the same. refuses to work with 5ghz. I can put the PS4's next to my router and it still refuses to connect. can't sign into the PS4 network and I get errors saying it can't get an IP etc.
I looked on my ISP's forum and I can see others are having the issues too so I'm guessing it's down to the router. I do have a spare router so I can try that (IIRC it worked but every-once-in-a-while my download speeds were very slow) but yeah, point is, ISP's are trying to piss you off with their routers. lol

Is the router next to anything thick and solid? 5ghz has a pretty weak signal, the consoles probably dont even pick up the signal because it isnt strong enough to run PSN services.

Well, the only thing that I have by it was (not using it right now) a Pi 4 which has a 5ghz interface for it's wireless.
Other than that, nope; nothing is blocking it.

I've not long tried my old but spare router and didn't have to change anything on it, connected to the 5ghz network first try.
So I'm guessing my router is either defective or it doesn't like my PS4's.

Go to your router settings on your PC and then go to your "Wireless Settings" and select the 5ghz band, disable it, reboot the router, and then re-enable the 5ghz band.

I just go wired. You can get range boosters too that let you plug in Ethernet.

That's not the point here, also; I don't have any spare ports for another Ethernet wire and I ain't purchasing anything else.

Well what else are you going to do? No other option that anyone suggested worked. I had this problem before, and this is what I done to solve it. It sounds like you have either a lot of interference or your router is crappy (mine is too). I have to run a range booster in my place to have 5G everywhere in my place.

Get my ISP to fix their sh*t.

Indeed but it's not a range problem...

Good for you. again, this isn't a Wi-Fi range problem. it's a PS4/router problem... and I'm not the only one, please search with Google and you'll see others too.

Yes, my router is a sh*t router but a range booster will not help at all. I have other devices, iPad's, tablets, laptops, smartphones etc and they're all fine...

It is a bandwidth problem if your PS4 won’t connect to 5G. You stated yourself that 20 megahertz was the only way it would recognize it also. Try making it one SSID, and also dial down the 2.4 transmission band to like 3/4’s. Your issue it seems that there is bandwidth interference and the PS4 is picky af with 5G

Sorry but you're hilarious. it's NOT a range problem. it connects to the 5ghz fine if I don't have 40/80mhz set. 20mhz and it connects fine. if I turn 40/80mhz and it refuses to get an IP so....

:roflmao:

Nothing to do with a "range" problem because I have other PS4's, and other devices that connect fine. lol
No problems with my XBOX too.

AGAIN; please search with Google and you'll see others having issues too.

Wtf do you think the difference between 2.4GHz and 5GHz is? 5GHz has a higher frequency, so it has a hard time passing thru solid objects. Plus if you have a lot of devices using 5GHz on the same channels then that’ll cause interference as well. Why do you think when they are putting up 5G cell phone towers, they need to put up more than what 4G required?
