Theres a lot of misinformation and fear mongering going around about the paladins $30 buy in option right now, and I want to try and clear things up.

A lot of people arent even trying to do research. They know the game is F2P on everything else, but see the $30 buy in on switch. For whatever reason, they jump to the conclusion that "Its a switch tax! Because devs know people will pay more for switch games!"

WRONG.

This is standard Hi-Rez Practice. They did this with both smite and paladins on both platforms. Early paid access for those willing to support it, F2P 3 or so weeks later. This is not a new practice. Whether or not you agree with it, is another thing entirely, and not the point of this post.

Think of it like a stress test. Nintendos online is a pretty big unknown at this point. Hell its half the reason why people are excited to see Paladins and Fortnite come to switch. A lot of people want to see how they handle voice chat, stability, etc. Not having a dedicated online service (yet) makes things a bit more interesting. Closing off access to only those who are willing to pay for it gives them time to make sure bugs are squashed and everything is good on their end.

Lets look back at the mario tennis demo. We've all seen the posts. The lag fest, people saying they wont buy it because of the lag. Even if Nintendo manages to fix the lag issues by release, they've already lost customers. FIRST IMPRESSIONS MATTER. By closing off access, this give Paladins enough time to make sure everything is ready to go before opening to everyone.

Now im not saying you should buy in, but supporting 3rd parties is a good idea right now. Seeing a large amount of support/success from a 3rd party helps draw in more 3rd party devs. Hell even if you wait till its free, play it, decide you like it, I would recommend buying the pack then. Supporting 3rd party devs is the best way to get more. And unlocking all current and future heroes is an insanely good deal for any F2P game.

Tl;dr

This isnt a switch tax, its a standard practice that Hi-rez has used with all their games on all console launches.

EDIT: striked out the idea that it could be because of nintendos network, as hirez uses their own servers.
