James Baldwin, Community Manager here, with the latest info on Triad Wars.

If you’ve made it to the site, you’re probably ready to know what Triad Wars is all about.

Set in the vibrant city of Hong Kong, Triad Wars is an online open-world action-adventure game where your goal is to rise to power as a criminal kingpin of the Triad underworld. As an Enforcerand mastermind of your criminal enterprise, it’s up to you to construct an empire the likes of which your enemies would never dare to mess with.

On the mean streets of Hong Kong, however, brawn alone won’t be enough – you’re going to need money first, and for that you’ll need brains.

First you’ll need to establish your Turf and set up a range of lucrative, albeit questionableoperations to build and expand your reach into the underworld – stacking dirty money to the sky, arming you to battle against rival gangs and claiming the streets before they do.

That being said, money alone isn’t going to win you any fights, or any face for that matter. To survive, you’ll need to hone your driving skills, get comfortable with a gun, and also be generally proficient at punching guys in the face. In Hong Kong, the action never stops and your rivals aren’t going down until you put them there.

Whether you choose to excel in extortion, hacking, money laundering, stolen cars, or even just good ol’ fashioned violence is strictly situational and will be representational of your playstyle. It’s your city to claim, and how you do it is entirely up to you.

For the latest developments join us here at the website, and follow the game on Twitter @TriadWars, at YouTube.com/TriadWars, and Facebook.com/TriadWars, where we’ll be sharing news, artwork, videos, and peaks at future content.

Triad Wars launches early 2015 for PC, but you can register now for the Closed Beta.

It’s time to get out there and show the world that crime does pay.

Regards,

James Baldwin

ESTABLISH YOUR TURF - PART 1

BzDCpC_CMAAqkA5.jpg

This is my turf. There are others like it, but this one is mine…

Triad Wars is about your rise to power as a criminal in the vibrant city of Hong Kong. You’llstart at the bottom and work your way up the ranks of your Triad, deciding how to build your empire, step by step. Your turf is your key to resources, money, and power - and it needs to be both expanded and defended. There’s a lot to take in, so in this blog series we’re going to take you into the nitty-gritty of managing your turf and what you can expect to see in the game.

Starting Triad Wars, you’ll select a location to create your empire. At first, your turf will be humble, but as you add rackets (criminal enterprises we’ll get into in part two of this series) and upgrade your safehouse, you’ll begin to see improvement. Soon, you’ll have a thriving empire with rivals trying to take what is yours.

As you progress in the game, you’ll start earning resources from your own rackets as well as taking them from rival gangs. These resources can be used to purchase many things, but few are more important than upgrades to your safehouse. The better your safehouse gets, the better life gets. Not only will your enforcer start living better, but you’ll earn the ability to build even more rackets.

Just like in the real Hong Kong, space is limited so you need to decide which rackets you want to focus on. Do you want to focus on stealing cars and stripping them for parts? Smuggling? Counterfeiting? Managing your cockfighting ring?

Your turf is vital to your success as a Triad boss. In part two of this series, we’ll take a closer look at rackets, and how they support your rise to power.

More soon…

ESTABLISH YOUR TURF - PART 2

Bzh97ByCUAAoOxB.jpg:large

In Part One of this series, we introduced you to your Turf and outlined the importance it has to your success as a gangster in Triad Wars. Part Two of this series explains the Racket System and its role in your rise to power.

Rackets make goods – goods that can be sold on the Black Market or used to create items and opportunities worth much more.

There are five types of rackets: Extortion, Counterfeiting, Gambling, Auto Theft, and Smuggling.

Extortion

Sometimes people need a bit of coercing to help them remember who runs Hong Kong. Prime targets include the city’s food cart vendors (look out, Pork Bun Man!) and its lucrative Minibus routes. If you’re smart enough, you can enlist the help of Loan Sharks to do your dirty work for you.

Counterfeiting

If you want to survive on these streets, you better understand what’s hot in the market and how to make your own version of it. You can run a factory to make knock-off fashions or churn out your own version of the latest electronics, but both of these will require a steady supply of stolen designs – so you’ll need some hackers working for you too. (And, paying everyone is easy enough if you print your own money.)

Gambling

Gangsters find it difficult to resist putting money down on sure things – which we’re happy to whisper in their ear when they stop by our Cockfighting Rings and Gambling Dens. But, even though they might make a buck in the beginning, at the end of the day, the house ALWAYS wins.

Auto Theft

Some people don’t pay their debts. When this happens, you need to step in and…ahem…borrow something of theirs. Like their car. From there, sell them on the Black Market or strip them for parts and make entirely new cars in your Auto Shop.

Smuggling

Can you tell the difference between a Salmon and a Red Herring? Your Fish Market is a prime place to hook some suckers. The money you make can be used to smuggle and sell exotic goods from all across Asia.

Once you’ve built your rackets, produce your goods, and then quickly transfer them to your Warehouse before your rivals raid you. In Triad Wars, everyone wants to profit from your hard work!

Next week we’ll look at the Black Market and Exports in more detail. They’re the key to turning your fledging enterprise into a true fortune.

NOTICE: We’ll be hosting our very first Twitch stream on October 17th, 2014 to answer any questions you have relating to turfs, rackets, or anything else discussed in this blog series. Please leave a comment on any of the blog posts or in this forum thread if you’d like us to answer your question live!

ESTABLISH YOUR TURF - PART 3

B0G9ApPCYAAQcRu.jpg:large

So far in this series, we’ve given you a general overview of your Turf, walked you through the Racket System and now we’re going to get into the nitty-gritty and explain how Exports and the Black Market work in Triad Wars.

Exports

Occasionally, you’ll be contacted about an export order that needs to be fulfilled. How you complete these orders is up to you: steal from your rivals; make them with your rackets; or, buy them on the Black Market. Once you have the required goods, you’re responsible for delivering on-time and in one piece. This could mean riding shotgun while your truck is delivering knock off fashions, defending dock workers as they load up bundles of counterfeit money, or completing another tense, high-action job.

If you manage to complete the order, you’ll be rewarded handsomely with Cash and Face (more on this in a later Blog post). These Export Missions are not easy or quick, but they can mean the difference between success and failure as a Triad Boss in Hong Kong.

James Agay, Senior Designer on Triad Wars had this to say about Export Missions:

“Exports are high risk gambles: the payout is huge, but you have to put your goods on the line. In a typical export, you are maybe moving a shipment of hot car parts from your warehouse to the docks and you’re riding shotgun on the transport truck. Rivals will be out to stop you, to intercept your goods, and if they can take you out, your stuff is lost. If you can make it through, you’ll make a ton of cash and earn a lot of face. It’s the fastest way to level up and the fastest way to make money, but you’ll need the goods and the skill to pull it off.”

Black Market

The Black Market is where goods find buyers and buyers find goods. The value at which goods can be purchased or sold is based on supply and demand. If you have overproduced something or stolen more than your warehouse can hold you’ll want to dump it onto the market. Similarly, if you have a hot export contract but not enough of what is needed, you can top yourself up to start the export. Don’t spend too much on the Black Market though, this forum post ahead of time to ensure your question is addressed.

Who knows, maybe we’ll even toss a Closed Beta key to one of our viewers. See you there!

RAIDS AND OPERATIONS - PART 1

triad_wars_3.jpg

The daily life of a triad member isn’t always full of ****-fighting, gambling and drinking… sometimes you have to do a bit of work to build your empire. In Triad Wars, there are many different ways to build up your fortune but for sheer visceral action nothing beats Raids and Operations.

When you go on a Raid, don’t expect to walk up to a Racket and have them to welcome you with open arms. When you start taking on lower-level enforcers, their defenses are usually pretty small with some guys outside and a few more inside. As you approach the more valuable Rackets, you’ll find yourself facing ever-improving defenses. If it looks like it could be a particularly tough fight, you can call in some Allies to help you out. These are AI fighters who aren’t afraid to take a punch, kick or blade for you.

Raids are always very dramatic, brutal battles with rival gangs ready to throw everything at you to stop you stealing from their Rackets. Imagine hardcore close-quarter fighting where there’s little room to maneuver and even less room for error; bullets flying from every direction until you get close enough to switch to bloody bruising hand-to-hand, fist-to-mouth and knee-to-face combat.

You can’t afford to take too long on a Raid - otherwise you risk being captured by the cops or taking on reinforcements from the rival gang. The time limits are tight! If you want to give yourself the best chance in a Raid, find the guy who’s calling for backup and take him out before he makes the call.

There are three ways to succeed in a Raid. The most simple is to escape having stolen the proceeds from one Racket. If you’re a little more successful, you can escape with the proceeds from all the Rackets. The best rewards are saved for those players who are able to take out all the rackets and theninfiltrate the safehouse and take out the Enforcer.

In Triad Wars, a gamer’s success is measured by the concept of ‘Face’. If you succeed in a Raid you earn more Face; if you die during a Raid you will lose Face. This will become very important to your progress. We’ll talk a lot more about Face in the future.

As a player gains Face their stature is reflected by the scale of their safehouse and the complexity of their defenses. As the safehouses get larger, and the rewards greater, the defences increase making the Raids harder.

In tandem with the concept of Raids, Triad Wars features smaller events called Operations. Think of these as small, side missions which are related to the larger Rackets around the world. Taking part in an Operation often has benefits which give you a greater chance of successwhen taking on a raid.

We’ll have much more about Raids and Operations in next week’s post. Thanks for reading. We’re looking forward to sharing more about one of our favourite parts of the game.

RAIDS AND OPERATIONS… MEET THE ENFORCERS
maxresdefault.jpg

In last week’s blog post we introduced Raids and Operations. These are the meat on the Triad Wars bones. If you want to work your way up to Dragon Head you’ll need to become very good at Raids which means becoming an expert at combat. Sure, you have your AI Allies to help you out but there are few things more satisfying than leading your team in a Raid and leaving with someone else’s blood on your knuckles.

Raids are brutal battles but you’ll always be able to find some useful equipment hanging around the environment. If you’re raiding a counterfeiting Racket, try crushing your enemy with a printing press or, if you’re by the docks, look for the large fish hooks… they’re a great place to leave an enemy impaled while you take out the rest of his crew. Some of the environmental kills can only be used once so make sure you take out the biggest guy with it… no point creating a man kebab with a tiny guy on a hook if the big guys keep swinging at you.

If you read last week’s blog you’ll have seen the ways to succeed in a Raid:

1 – Escape with the proceeds of one Racket

2 – Escape with the proceeds from all the Rackets

3 – Escape with the proceeds of more than one Racket and take out the Enforcer

4 – Infiltrate the Safehouse and take out the Enforcer

As you progress through the levels and take on more competent Enforcers, you’ll need to change your strategy accordingly. In early Raids you might see all the guards charge you at the same time so if you survive that you’ve got a great chance of succeeding. As the player levels increase though, you can expect far more resistance with much greater weapons and close combat skills.

Once you’ve battled your way through to the top of the Safehouse, it’s time to tackle the Enforcer. There’s a reason this guy is in charge; he’s the tough one, the one you need to beat (literally) if you want to rob all the Rackets and earn the maximum Face. It’ll be tough. A few simple punches won’t work on this guy. When you take out an Enforcer you need to be much more strategic about the fight to make sure you escape with the spoils instead of having your Raid spoiled…or worse.

As you play Triad Wars you’ll encounter a lot of Enforcers but each battle will be different. When you’re in an Enforcer fight you’re not just fighting a random AI battle; you’re fighting another Triad Wars gamer. Each time you Raid a Racket you’re robbing another gamer; each time you beat an Enforcer you’re battering another gamer.

We’re going to talk more about Player Customization later this year but this should be enough to give you a little hint about how you’ll be able to change your Enforcer to make him really standout from the bruised and battered crowd.
