Just face at your opponent and just tap the hit button rapidly, That way he will be scared and run away

That's what I've been doing but it seems like even though my cursor is on them and I'm in range I just can't get them.

There's quite a lot of lag issues in the game so it's not really going to be a fair fight, Are you host or are you in your friends game?

It's in a really large public server, I always have great connection though.

That's the problem, It really doesn't matter on the connection, It's the game in general, There fixing the lag and bug problems in the update which on there twitter said it would be mid june or july for the release.
