Xpargas is correct, but remember Xbox Live Gold codes don't have regions.

Why would microsoft points have a region but not xbox live gold codes? I dont see the point in that.

Has to do with currency, seeing as you can buy games with ms points.

Xbox live gold codes are not region protected, but gold points are i have a US account and a UK account and live in the UK. so when i tried to put 2100 ms points on my US account and they didn't i was very unhappy after about an hour of shouting down the phone at M$ i eventually got to a supervisor who said that i can just put them on an UK sliver account and the DLC would still would on my US account.

I used a 12 month UK goldcard on my US account and it worked fine.

So in conclusion Gold card are not locked but MS points are but if you get some from a different region just make a sliver for that MS point card.
