I have an Alienware with what I think are pretty good specs, but my computer is not running games very well. I have no idea what the problem is, so I am looking for some help with this.

My specs are
Intel Core i7 CPU Q740 1.73 GHz (8 CPUs), ~1.7GHz
6114MB Ram
Direct X11

Some games run okay, but others like Diablo are giving me like 10 fps on the lowest settings which makes no sense at all. I talked to a guy at a computer store who told me I should buy 2 8gb sticks for like $100 and that he would install it for $20. Is this what I should do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

What's your graphics card? I'm assuming THIS is your laptop, which means you have the HD 5870M. If you do, then I see no reason why you're getting such crappy frame rates -- the card should be able to get @ least 30fps on medium settings. Searching around on the D3 forums, I've found a few topics about low fps with the 5870M:

Make sure you have the latest Catalyst drivers installed, and updating your BIOS could help as well.

Oh and the guy at the computer store is a fucking dumba**. The recommended requirements for D3 list 2GB, and even then that's plenty enough.

NVidia GeForce 460m

I'm thinking there may be some internal error, so I want to get it checked out. Theres no reason this computer should be performing so badly. I may have a virus I'm unaware of, but Malwarebytes says I'm clean so I don't know.

Thanks for the help though

Yeah the 5870M and GTX 460M are pretty close performance wise so the specs of your card aren't an issue. Do you have the latest drivers?

When you're playing D3, alt-tab out and open up Task Manager (Ctrl Shift Esc) and check your CPU usage. That could be bottlenecking it (although I extremely doubt it). Oh and do you have the latest NVIDIA drivers installed? They released new ones a few days back, not sure if they have for your card.

And if it's only happening on one or two games then hardware-wise you are fine.

I played Torchlight on max settings, everything played extremely well. I didn't record the fps, but it was smooth. CPU usage varied from 15-35%
I played Diablo 3 on lowest settings, fps was extremely low around 7-10. CPU usage was like 20%

I do have the latest NVIDIA drivers

It could very well be just a problem with the game and your hardware. You can try the solutions found in this FAQ: http://us.battle.net/support/en/article/diablo-iii-video-performance-issues or just submit a support ticket.
