Now that the public release of iOS 5 is just around the corner, as well as the iPhone 4S launch, the jailbreak community is begging the question; when will the next untethered jailbreak come out? Ever since the beginning of the iOS 5 beta cycle, the redsn0w 0.9.x beta has been able to allow users to jailbreak iOS 5, however it has only been tethered. For the hardcore users who will jailbreak no matter what, this may not be an issue. But for the majority of us, we need an untethered jailbreak to move forward with jailbreaking our device(s). Although there may have seemed to be no progress in formulating an untethered for iOS 5, this is not the case.
About ten hours ago, Stefan Esser (i0nic), known for his infamous exploits that got us untethered jailbreaks on 4.3.x, tweeted out that the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 is "covered" already. And to conclude his tweet, he left us with "Guess who?" The answer is much more obvious than it may seem to be.
On numerous occasions, members of the Chronic Dev Team have dropped us little hints that progress is moving ever forward in regards to an iOS 5 untethered jailbreak. Chronic Dev members posixninja (@p0sixninja) and OPK (@iOPK) at mentioned at MyGreatFest, the world's first jailbreak convention, that the Chronic Dev Team has found at least five userland exploits that could be potentially used for iOS 5. Finding these "loop holes" is exciting within itself however the process is just at the beginning.
Stefan's tweet "out to the world" is just a reiteration of what has been happening. If you were in doubt that something is coming or being worked on, be reassured. Stefan made it clear that he doesn't have an ETA on the release of this jailbreak tool, and I can guarantee you that the Chronic Dev Team doesn't either. Continue to be patient, supportive, and be extremely excited that it is on the way!
Stay tuned.
