GTA IV ISO MODDING INFO

Basically many people have been trying to mod GTA IV without much success, but WCz had success with about 5 DVDs. To begin: You will need a couple of tools to edit whatever You please:

1. OpenIV or SparkIV : I prefer OpenIV
2. IV Needle
3. Xbox Backup Creator 2.8

I won't go into the basics, there are tutorials for modifying it.
These are the files which are able to be modified without any crashing or freezing:

1. Handling.dat
2. Explosionfx.xml
3. Visual Settings.dat : bloom setting, motion blur...
4. pedgrp.dat
5. pedpersonality.dat : be careful!! any changes to your character will cause freezing!!
6. vehicle.ide : flags for vehicles with special fx like backfire!!
7. weaponinfo.xml
8. american.gxt for vehicle names
9. vehOff.csv : for dashboard views!!!
10. scenario.dat : for pedestrians doing this around the city!!!
11. carcols.dat : car colors: rims, body, fenders, whatnot..
12. cargrp.dat : car groups for different gangs and areas throughout the game

All of these can be modded, but just not all at the same time or the game will hang.
A quick way around this is to basically modify what you want in the common rpf and delete unnecessary language files before saving or rebuilding the file. Like what was said in a previous post. Props to them for the find.

Also xbox360.rpf contains the timecyc.dat which can also be modified in order to have more realistic looking daylight and nightlight skies. Very impressive.

Now here is what (I) have included in the Ima(g)e file/(i)so and have had no complications whatsoever:

(I)SO (I)MAGE:
COMMON:
- handling
- vehicleoff
- visual settings
- americangxt
- weaponinfo
- ped personality
- pedgrp = NO POLICE
- ExplosionFX

XBOX360:
-TimeCyc = realistic looking skies between day/night.

Be careful modding anything relating to pedpersonality relating to Niko:

Flags like smoking, softjack and such can cause freezing or hanging in the first 10 seconds of loading a game!!!

you have to rename some of those in the default.dat but leave a clean copy of each in the common.rpf > data folder....justan example....

weaponinfo.xml <--- leave unmodified copy
weapon.xml<--- same file, modified and rename from weaponinfo.xml to weapon.xml

wait, are you saying you have to have 2 weapon files?

if so, no you don't, just rename the weaponinfo.xml to whatever and change it in default as well

i believe that only applies to the pc version

Exactly, that's why it is in the Title: ISO Modding. No modification to the default.dat is done on the console version. Due to the file size limitation, anything over the file size will cause corruption.

Um why is this guy posting this now? It's not like modding gta was just discovered, and this guide isn't very useful at all. Many other files can be modded besides the ones he mentioned, and if the game "hangs" that's probably because he didn't do something right.
