Recently I got a Pokemon Gold as a gift, but the save was sadly not working :/ I have seen many people having that problem with gameboy games.
I will explain step by step how I got pokemon gold, and my Pokemon Ruby working, this also works with other games, not only pokemon.

What you're going to need is:

The game you will repair,
If you're repairing a GB/GBC game you are going to nee a CR2025 Lithium cell battery, but a CR2032 works fine to, thats what I used. If you are repairing a GBA you will need a CR1616 battery. You should be able to buy it at a local shop.
Some sort of screwdriver to open it.
Tape, to get the battery stuck where it's suppose to be.

First you need to open the cardige,

It should look like this inside, you are going for the battery, take out the battery ( the round one ) be sure to not breake the small metal thing the battery is stuckt on!
Now, insert the new battery and a piece of tape to get it sitting there, and close the cardige.

There you go! you're game should now be working fine and the save should work
YOU WILL HAVE TO START A NEW GAME! you're old save file will not be there.

Have fun with your new game, and feel free to ask questions!
