Would defragging my hard drive and cleaning my registry allow me to gain GB's of space?

No. It will speed you up, but no it won't free much space.

I'd reccomend Ccleaner too. I try to use it about once a month. Most it ever got for me was 3 gigs, but usually gets around 200mb

^ CCleaner does the same stuff and more. Also, you won't have more memory afterwards, you'll have more storage space on your hard drive.

30-40 gigs is really really excessive for most people. If you manage to free 30-40 gigs you probably haven't done that in maybe 10 years.

umm... thanks for all the suggestions on how to gain space, but my real concern here is how I gained 10 Gigs without deleting anything.

If you would have used ccleaner you could have cleared like 20GB's.

ok.... you're missing my point.... people don't normally gain that much disk space from routine defrags and registry cleanings. So why the heck do I have 10 more GB's when I didn't a few days ago?

Don't worry about it unless you notice something missing.
