I have had this problem, eventually, with all the re-chargeable battery packs in my controllers. The problem seems to occur when you continually run your battery completely flat, too many times.

The usual problem symptoms are, charging cable LED briefly turning RED (charging) but then turning GREEN (charged) 5-10 seconds later, indicating a full battery. However battery is still flat.
This is a false reading given by the charging cable, which interprets that the battery is full, when it is actually dead flat.

There is a fix, which I discovered awhile ago.

This method can take more than a day sometimes, but what I did was continually repeat over and over and over again until it charges properly and the LED stays RED, indicating a proper charge. It may take 30 tries. It may take 300 tries. It will almost always eventually fix the battery though.

1. Plug charging cable in.
2. Charger LED should be RED indicating it's "charging".
3. Wait for charger LED to change from RED to GREEN.
4. Quickly unplug charger.
5. Rinse and repeat.

This will trickle feed the battery, so the charging cable can eventually detect the battery is flat, and will charge the battery as it normally should then.
This method may take awhile, just be patient and stick to the process.

I had this problem with 5 charge cables and I got so fed up I threw all of them out.

Would this work if your charge cable LED showed up as off (no light)?

I ended up just buying a wired controller and it has worked great.

Dayum! Sounds like you threw away 5 perfectly good Play & Charge cables...
:o

I have had my original battery pack from my very first white controller do the same thing you described.

I did the process listed in my tutorial, using the timing from when I had fixed the other battery packs, as a guide, and the battery is now working 100% again.

I haven't come across a battery pack that wasn't fixed using this method.

Hi, sorry if many years have passed since this discussion, sorry also for the way I write because I am a foreigner. So I tried this method and it worked: first the 4 notches appeared, a few minutes later they had become 2 notches. I tried to play it and after 2 hours it discharged. I tried to charge it and this happened: I connected the wire to the controller and it was charging, I turned off the xbox and the light was briefly red and then it turned green. So I turned on the xbox, unplugged and reconnected the controller and the original problem happened, i.e. the light was briefly red and then turned green. Now I have been unplugging and reattaching the cable from the controller for 3 hours, but the different thing is that in my situation the battery is not dead, in fact I can use the controller, but I can't charge it ....
