I seem to be able to play the latest games (backup games) on my 360 without having to update my firmware or use some wave 4 patcher or whatever they are.

Does this mean I have a modchip instead of a firmware flash?

oh and my 360 is about 2 years old so it can't already have the latest wave patched or firmware installed

No, you probably have iXtreme 1.51, which will boot wave 4 games I believe.

then is there an easy way to check if I have ixtreme or a modchip?

seems like I would need to hook it up to my computer to check

edit: ok, upon quick googling looks like i have to hook it up to my pc sata connector and use jungleflasher to check?

i was also wondering do people use modchips on their 360 these days? seems like everyone is just flashing rather then modchipping

how can you say for sure that its not a modchip?

Modchips are are pretty much obsolete, flashing is the way to go.

Don't know much about modchips honestly...

There's different types of "chips" you can have.

But to just play back-ups, flashing does it.
