Is there anyway I can get the DLC packs for free?

RGH, hence why this is in the MODDING support
There is no normal support so people usually post everything here.
But of course you can get free DLC. Just download the containers and unlock them with e.g. XM360 or 360 Content Manager

What exactly is a "container?"

What exactly is a "container?"
The single file for a DLC item. For example, when you are on the retail dash and look at your system storage and see one file labeled "Map Pack 3," that is a container.

You would need to find the DLC online, download it, transfer it to your console and then unlock it using XM360.

Since you seem new to using an RGH, I think you should watch this playlist:
watch all of the videos in this playlist in order. The videos are easy-to-follow tutorials which will teach you how to set up all of the proper software and homebrew that will you ever need:
