I tried months ago to update my Xbox console but I was unsuccessful.

The update runs normal until about 80% then freezes for ~20 minutes and errors out. I will post the exact error later on. The update I'm trying to do was the update that flashed the Xbox drives to read the new disk format.

Several months before the console's lite-on drive went bad and I was able to retrieve the firmware off it and replaced it with a BenQ. The only change I made was the serial/key in the firmware to spoof it, the drive still contains "original" firmware and (not including this update) the drive was working perfect.

My thought is the update is trying to connect with what it believes to be a Lite-On drive and can't because(i imagine anyways) the protocol is different.

Any thoughts on getting around this or anybody have a different idea to what the problem is??

Any (knowledgeable) input is much appreciated.

'Spoofed' drives (like yours, a BenQ spoofed as a LiteOn) are detectable and will fail these updates. You MUST buy a LiteOn drive, put the original firmware and keys on the new drive, and then update your console.

No word on if this failed update flags your console for a ban. It is a possibility, however.

If you still have the old drive, just hook it up. It does not have to work, it just has to be detectable. So, if it had a read error, you can still use it to update, just not play games.

*These kind of issues show that spoofing is detectable. While there has not been a ban-wave for spoofing in quite awhile, spoofing your drive is always risky and is not recommended

You could try to buy a Liteon on ebay that has a disk read error, flash it with the correct Fw, then update your console and finally put the PenQ back in.

However, it seems these checks are built into games now. I put a Sammy into my JTAG (original drive was a BenQ) and it gave me an E66 error. I am unsure if it was just because the Sammy wasnt able to give a AP2.5 response but I would be careful.

I'm just going to buy a drive and have it flashed. I don't have the tools and I would just rather put the correct drive in there so this issue doesn't resurface.

Thanks for the help though.
