Can you play GFWL games on steam? (Or visa versa)

I was wondering if I bought a game for Steam could I play it on GFWL? (That way I can talk with my xbox friends) Or if not could I play a GFWL game on steam to join steam servers?

Sorry for sounding like a nub, I just got a PC that can finally play some games.

There is no such thing as "steam servers" for games. Steam versions and non-Steam versions are exactly the same and use the same servers.
If you buy a GFWL game from Steam then it will have both the Steam and GFWL overlays.
