i found out I can crossfire my radeon 7950 core and radeon 7950 double....so yeah, they don't need to be the exact same card

Correct. They will only run as fast as the slowest card is running though.

If I remember correctly couldn't the sapphire 290's be unlocked into 290x with just a bios swap?
