It depends. Usually, if you leave your retails offline whilst you are online with your RGH then you should be good. I have done that for a few years now and none of my retails have been banned, but I believe A Atlas tried the same and his retail got banned.
Spoofing your mac address is the way to go.

Correct. I never had both on at the same time let alone even plugged in at the same time. Bad luck I guess on my part or else somehow they noticed my WaW .iso mods from a year or so prior that is why they banned my retail. I am going more-so with the former that I just had some bad luck.

I lost my retail to this about 1.5 years back

Just never mix anything you do with JTAG/RGH with what you do on your retail. In other words, don't defecate where you eat.
