Any tips on remembering the difference between affect and effect.

For example the way I remember when to use "then" vs "than" is by remembering the following.
  • Then is used to situate actions in time. Remembering the "e" in the two words. Then = Time
  • Than is used introduce the second element in a comparison. Remembering the "a" in the 2 words. Than = Comparison.
Need something like that but for remembering when to use affect versus effect.

This is a great way to remember  I would have neve thought about that.

affect spelled with an A is a verb, and effect spelled with an E is a noun.

Affect is a verb, effect is a noun.

Affect is an action word that shows the change in something.
Effect is a noun and often used in the past tense. "what effect did it have?"

Here's a nifty visualization I found.

Affect is when you're changing or influencing something. Effect is the result of something else happening (think cause and effect).

My harsh words might affect you.
My harsh words' effect was not enough.

Just to add something, I know it isn't what you are asking for but if you have a hard time another alternative you could use is "impact".
