It's a good card. I doubt you'll regret the purchase.

If you want a cost effective card get the 290X its much cheaper than the 970 and better at higher resolutions (also if you chose to CF 290X in the future 290X in CF beats 980 in SLI in 4k+ gaming)

Budget?

Also the 290x is pretty much better than the 970 in all ways.

Like I said, they are basically the same, the 290x is better imo because it actually has 4GB of VRAM and its a monster when CF for 4k. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1059?vs=1355

Higher Vram and not just the 4gb Vram but much better memory bandwidth as well which makes it ideal on higher res gaming

The 290X is 100 bucks less than the 970 and will perform better in higher end games where memory bandwidth is important and in higher res gaming.

CF 8GB 290X stomps the 980
4gb 290X similar to the 980

I can't wait to see the 300 series performance with HBM ram the 390x is rumored to have between 600-1200gbps memory bandwidth which is 3-6 times the 980 bandwidth.

If your running games at 1080p the 970 is fine however the 290X is much cheaper and also why run games at 1080p even if you have a 1080p monitor you can use VSR and run games in 1440p+ which the higher bandwidth and more ram on the 290x is going to destroy. Also the 290x supports Freesync while the 900 series supports gsync who wants to spend hundreds of dollars on a monitor for gsync when all monitors supporting 1.2a display port or higher support freesync royalty free.

For a single GPU the 290X is far superior it dominates the 970 at higher resolutions which you will want even on a single 1080p monitor (using VSR to play games in 1440p+ on 1080p monitor).

Its cheaper than the 970 as well.

The best 290X are the Sapphire Tri-X & SApphire Vapor-x

The Tri-X isn't too bad priced at $265 after rebate. but you can find others for cheaper but the TriX is a nice cooler.
  • $284.99
  • $264.99 after $20.00 rebate card

Was cheaper the other day and they have sales all the time

im going to have to upgrade my PSU to buy that though as it needs a 750w minimum coz of how much it pulls. I only have aa 500w PSU and wont have the cash to dash out for both.

You don't need 750 watt PSU I know multiple people who have 290X's on AMD rigs with 550watt PSU (however they all have the 550watt XFX PSU which is high quality)

A 500-600 watt PSU is more than enough as long as its a nice quality PSU

The 290X cannot use more than 300 watts. Whats your CPU & PSU you have currently.

A similar rig would use about 486 max watts

However you run into the issue not all PSU's are perfect.
