Right now i hook up my laptop to my tv with a vga cable (or something i forget what its called exactly).
Anyways, the problem is, I can only see video - the audio still comes from my laptop.
My laptop has a bunch of ports on the left, one of which is an hdmi port.

Could I hook up my laptop to my TV with an HDMI cable and have both audio and video coming out of the TV?

If I remember right whenever I use the HDMI port I get audio through the TV.
And yes, that would be VGA.

VGA= Video graphics array...Only video there bud
HDMI=High definition audio/video...You get em both
If you don't have hdmi and are using vga but still want exterior sound you will have to use the audio jacks on your laptop to connect it to an outside source.

I did this before with vga. Just plug in some speakers to the headphone jack or if your tv/stereo has a 3.5mm jack (standard normal, ipods, etc) then just plug it into there.

HDMI will do both though.

What kind of laptop do you have? If you don't mind me asking.
HP Pavilion

I've got an AV Receiver so it'll probably be easier to set it up w hdmi + i've got a very nice sound system hooked up with the av receiver
