Xbox Is Changing How Gamertags Work In Latest Update

At E3 2019, Microsoft announced major changes to the Xbox Live Gamertag system.

At E3 2019, Microsoft announced major changes to the Xbox Live Gamertag system. The biggest change is that you will be able to choose any Gamertag you want, even if it's already taken. If you choose a Gamertag that is already claimed, Xbox will auto-generate an ID suffix of numbers after an # symbol. For example, if you wanted HarambeXbox117 and it's already taken, you could be HarambeXbox117#1056 or some other variation of that.

The suffix font size is smaller and the color is different, so the name you want will stand out. You can see an example of this in the image above. Importantly, nothing is changing for existing Gamertags; you don't need to do anything, and you won't lose your name. These new changes are seemingly inspired by similar systems on Battle.net and Discord.

Additionally, Gamertags will now support more alphabets to work with more than 200 languages from around the world. The newly supported character sets include:

    • Basic Latin
    • Latin-1 Supplement
    • Hangul
    • Katakana
    • Hiragana
    • CJK Symbols for languages in China, Japan, and Korea
    • Bengali
    • Devanagari
    • Cyrillic
    • Thai

The Gamertag changes are live now in the Xbox app on PC and will come to mobile and console "over the next year." Microsoft also teased that these changes represent the "first step in an ongoing journey for evolving gamertags, so we appreciate your patience as the team continues to implement new features based on your feedback."

DAAAMNNNN!!!! Huge change, I dont know how I feel about it. On one hand I’m happy and relieved that mother****ers wont be selling taxed GTs but then on the other hand it means my OG tags mean nothing now.

If the original is no longer taken wouldn't that mean the next person will get no number?

I'd be ok with this but one thing about the "battletag" system is that if I am the only one using my gamertag (goldplusanotherword) , why can't I be [example]#1? I'm the first to have it. #6494 looks stupid. Why even bother changing it if its going to have a random suffix? With discord messenger if you have premium it lets you choose your number. At least let xbox gold members have that.

Seen this when they announced it. RIP OG's. This is going to cause a lot of confusion.

I don't really like this change tbh maybe down the line i might like it but i prefer the older system.

I have a few questions here, don't know if they've been answered at E3 since I haven't watched it. But will the unique IDs at the end of gamertags be visible in-game? Because I can definitely see a lot of confusion being started when people with the same gamertags are in the same game. Also, since the changes are live on the xbox app, what if you change your gamertag to one with characters that aren't supported yet on the console?

after doing some digging, some newer games will have the new gamertag system in it. Some new games will show your gamertag as "MLG QuickScopes #9034" and some of the older games will show "MLG QuickScopes9034" you can also get a free gamertag change here, even if you already used your free change after creating your account https://social.xbox.com/en-us/changegamertag
