In an age where the words "technology" and "privacy" rarely mean anything, Silent Circle's black phone is looking to change up the game for everyone involved. So, what is the Blackphone, and how did it come to be, you ask? The Blackphone came out of a desire to address the security shortcomings of Android, which has been suffering from constant leaks over the last few months.

Now, you may be wondering what the Blackphone has to offer in terms of security, since, after all, that is the point of the phone. That's a great question, actually. The Blackphone uses a modified version of the Android OS, called PrivatOS, to help bring "privacy and control directly in the hands of its users". Using both secure applications, as well as modifcations to the system itself to help the user understand, and potentially, control third party applications that mess with the phone's data. In addition to this, the Blackphone comes with other services to help improve your security experience. One of these is SpiderOak, which allows the user to have 5GB of "zero-knowledge encrypted data backup". It also comes with Disconnect, which is a search engine that utilizes a VPN to keep your searches anonymous, which is certainly a nice thing to have.

So, you might think that all of this is great, but how does this phone perform as a phone? Does it have good specs? The Blackphone sports an impressive 2.0ghz quad-core processor, 16gb of storage, an 8 megapixel camera, and a 4.7 inch IPS display. To give you an idea of where this stands in terms of processing power, the Samsung Galaxy S4 featured a quad-core 1.9ghz processor, while the upcoming Galaxy S5 will feature a 2.5ghz quad-core. All in all, this seems to be a very solid phone.

If you're wondering how you can get your own Blackphone, you can now pre-order it from it's own website! For the price of $629, you can own your own Blackphone. The phones will ship in June of this year, around the world. What do you think? Is the Blackphone a silly gimmick to make money, or is it a serious new contender in the phone market? Let us know how you feel below.
