Telltale Games is a success story in itself. From making silly, smaller games they have grown with the tremendous success they have seen with their own specific genre, focusing on excellent storytelling in a point-and-click universe. Their most known successes The Walking Dead and A Wolf Among Us, followed by the newer Tales from the Borderlands and Game of Thrones, have all received both good review scores and seen very good sales numbers. All games based on previous stories, one more successful than the other. However, their last announcement might surprise some, as this time, the collaboration is not with someone already great at telling stories, but with someone that usually would let players tell the story themselves. Some time in 2015 you can experience Minecraft through the eyes of Telltale Games.

In announcements both on Mojang's Blog and on Telltale Game's blog, it is explained that a collaboration is in place for a new take on the well known Minecraft universe:

"Minecraft: Story Mode will be an all-new narrative-driven game series developed by Telltale in collaboration with Mojang. Set in the world of Minecraft, the series will feature an original story, driven by player choice. It will not be an add-on for Minecraft, but rather a separate stand-alone product. Telltale's game series will mix new characters with familiar themes, in an entirely original Minecraft experience, inspired by the Minecraft community and the game that continues to inspire a generation."

This will be a new creative process for Telltale, this time they will use feedback from the rather large Minecraft player base in the attempt to make a story that is as "minecrafty" as possible. Mojang will of course also have their say, but we will most definitely recognise the ever so familiar Telltale twist on the finished product. According to Mojang, this is not the official story of Steve, or an explanation of the Minecraft world, but it is going to be "a cool game". Another thing worth noting is that visuals "won't look exactly like Minecraft, but it will feel authentic in its own special way."

The game is set to be available on Xbox One and 360, PlayStation 3 and 4, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android-based devices some time in 2015, and will release in episodes just like we are used to from Telltale. It looks like 2015 will be a year with a lot of content from Telltale, both Tales from the Borderlands and Game of Thrones have several episodes left, and now this. Telltale ends their announcement saying: "We'll have more in the months ahead, but for now, we thank you again, and wish you a safe and happy holiday and a prosperous New Year!" Now we will just have to see if that means another game or just more info on this one. I wouldn't mind both.

Oh, and in true Mojang spirit, there's a Tl; dr version: play your way through Info Quest II if you want details.

What are your thoughts on this new collaboration?

Many thanks to Adolfin for the tip!
