While you will be able to get your hands on an improved version of the PS4 starting next month, you'll have to wait until early next year to buy Sony's new high-end wireless headset.
Sony announced today that the PS4's Platinum headset will now release in January, at least in North America. Previously, it had been slated for release during the vague "holiday" period that suggested you'd be able to get your hands on it by Christmas. It was announced during the same PlayStation event as the PS4 Pro, slim PS4, and updated PS4 controller and camera.
The company already does offer a first-party wireless headset for PS4, the very nice Gold Wireless Headset. Whereas the Gold carries an MSRP of $100 (but goes for $73 on Amazon currently), the Platinum was announced with a $160 price.
It's described as a "high-end" headset featuring "premium construction and materials for extra comfort, as well as enhanced highly positional 7.1 virtual surround sound powered by SIE's proprietary 3D audio technology." Like the Gold, it has a hidden microphone and a 3.5 mm audio jack. Sony also says it's compatible with PlayStation VR.
It's also awfully nice-looking, as you can see in the images above. There's no word on if any changes are being made for the January launch, but given the timing, this is more likely a production delay rather than something related to its design.
