Destiny developer Bungie promoted Age of Triumph as the final update it would issue for the game, and the studio reaffirmed today that it won’t be changing how Destiny plays at this point.
“We’ve heard many of you asking if the current sandbox will get another design pass,” said Bungie in its weekly update. “Our sole focus at this time is Destiny 2.”
The “sandbox” is the term Bungie uses to refer to how Destiny plays — the relative strengths and weaknesses of the weapons, armor, subclasses, abilities and the like. In gaming jargon, people might call it the “meta” or simply the “balance.”
It makes sense that it’s all hands on deck for Destiny 2 at Bungie. But some players aren’t thrilled about the current state of the sandbox, which, of course, last received a refresh with the Age of Triumph update at the end of March.
Many of the complaints seem to center around ammunition for special weapons. Bungie revamped the way special ammo works in a mid-February sandbox update — players now start Crucible matches with it but lose all of it when they die, so they have to pick it up from ammo crates that spawn once a minute. The studio tweaked certain elements like sidearm ammo in Age of Triumph.
“I will now officially bury my hopes of having my beloved special ammo back,” wrote Reddit user MarcoBessa in a thread about today’s weekly update on the Destiny subreddit. “Seems like I’ll be playing Overwatch and Rainbow Six, until [Destiny 2].”
Others lamented the current primacy of weapons like sidearms and the sniper rifles Ice Breaker and No Land Beyond, with one agreeing with the spirit of MarcoBessa’s comment: “Well guys I guess it’s time to give up on destiny 1 PVP balance wise.”
Bungie’s use of the phrase “our sole focus at this time” leaves a glimmer of hope that the studio will go back to the original Destiny and make further changes at some point after Destiny 2 debuts this September. But with just over three months to go until the sequel’s launch, some other people are taking the time to step away from Destiny and check out other games before Destiny 2 consumes their lives.
“Go see your family... come September they might forget who you are,” joked Redditor Colorajoe.
