Clans have been a very popular feature ever since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 first featured it. Ever since then, it has been expanding with exclusive Clan Rewards, Clan Customization, and the infamous competitive Clan Wars. It adds an extra competitive aspect to Call of Duty that you can contribute to besides your own stats, as well as display the accomplishments of you and your friends dominating the opposition. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Call of Duty: Ghosts brought the best experiences for us yet with regards to Clans, and the clan community is hoping to see more of the same.
On May 10th, a feature called 'Groups' will be implemented into Black Ops 3. This feature will include many different aspects regarding maintaining a social group whether it be a full fledged Clan, or just a group of casual friends. If you were the leader of a Clan in Advanced Warfare and want to secure your Clan name, or transfer your roster, visit https://www.callofduty.com/groups for more info. Otherwise, you can also start a new Group as soon as it's released and made available.
So, what exactly makes 'Groups' different from the past COD feature 'Clans'? As for the core features, really not much. Treyarch decided to call it 'Groups' and not 'Clans' so they can appeal to other types of gamers as well. 'Groups' is supposed to mean more than just a 'Clan' now. It is now a social collection of friends and teammates designed to improve in a collective effort, party up, share content, and compare stats on custom group leaderboards.
"Groups (currently in Beta state) adds an entirely new social element to the Black Ops universe. For the first time in a Call of Duty game, Groups offers an unprecedented in-game community designed from the ground up to bring players together. Tightly integrated with existing game systems, Groups helps players quickly expand their network of comrades and competitors. Join a Group of like-minded weekend warriors or create your own to take your clan to the next level."
The special features of 'Groups' include: Quick Join, Overview, Roster, Leaderboard, Showcase, and Admin. This link will provide more detailed explanations of each feature of you are interested, and again, 'Groups' goes live May 10th, 2016.
