Multiple World of Warcraft expansion confirmed

The beta for the fourth expansion for the popular RPG, World of Warcraft went live yesterday, as lucky contestants were notified via email whether or not they could test out the new features of The Mists of Pandaria. However Blizzard's COO, Paul Sams, hinted off that not only was the fifth expansion confirmed but Blizzard's team know exactly what they'll be doing "for multiple expansions ahead."

The COO was asked if he thought there would be success of future expansions following Pandaria, to which he replied: "Absolutely, because I know what the next one is. So, that being said, I think there's a lot of opportunity.

"I got the pitch from Chris Metzen of what they plan for 6.0 and I'm pretty geeked up about it. They already know what they're going to be doing for multiple expansions ahead."

Regarding the fifth expansion, Sams mentioned that: "they have an idea - a general framework. They're these lore creators. They're the ones who drive what the world looks like today and what it'll be like tomorrow and beyond.

"I think the future of World Of Warcraft continues to be bright and I think Mists of Pandaria is going to breathe huge life into what I believe is the best MMO out there. I think the number of people we have playing and the level of enthusiasm they have for the game suggests that to be the case."

Finally he concluded: "This is the next of many ways in which we're going to grow and improve and evolve this game."

It has become increasingly apparent that Blizzard's sales with regards to World of Warcraft have dropped significantly, however they appear to be very calm about the decline, worryingly so if the future for the corporation is a flood of expansions. In fact they don't plan on changing World of Warcraft at any point in the future; a good or bad thing?

We appear to have misjudged Blizzard, contemplating what they had in store for the future, perhaps more attention would be spent on its MMO project, Titan, but alas this is not the case as World of Warcraft seems to be the centre of attention, and it will be for several years after its already elongated life. Will the Mists of Pandaria and the future titles bring back the novelty of World of Warcraft, or will it be the downfall?
