On August 27th, 2012, Mojang revealed that Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition has sold 3.6 million copies making it the best "best-selling," Xbox Live Arcade game ever in less than a month of release! Seen on his Twitter, Daniel Kaplan posted: “I was really surprised to see that 3.6 million people have now purchased Minecraft for Xbox.” This is a financially heartwarming confirmation that over 7 million sales on PC and the 3.6m million sales on Xbox, brings the grand total to in the region of 12 million copies of Minecraft sold for Mojang.
News earlier this month that XBLA was selling 17,000 copies each day, it was unsurprising that Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition would reach such numbers. With Minecraft PC still selling over 10,000 copies a day at $26.95 a copy, and the 17,000 copies from Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, Mojang is looking to double its total earnings from last year mind boggling $7.2 million.
The use of skin packs and integration of famous recognizable characters such as Spiderman, Marcus Fenix from Gears of War and the knights from Castle Crashers may be another way that Mojang attempts to lure new customers with such famous characters. Mojang is intent on keeping its existing customers enticed to new content and releases to far surpass their $7.2 million target and perhaps even double it in the near future.
Have you purchased Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, and what do you think the likelihood is that Minecraft Xbox will reach the astounding numbers that the PC version did?
