In early July of 2014, newbie video game company GalaxyTrail Games entered the gaming scene with its first ever video game Freedom Planet for the Wii-U, and almost instantly it became a cult classic. It gathered a rather large following very quickly because it reminded gamers of nostalgic Sega Genesis era games, the most common being Sonic The Hedgehog. The prospect of making a sequel to the classic has been a popular demand ever since the first, so much so that GalaxyTrail Games confirmed it hopes to release an open beta by sometime in 2017. Similar to its predecessor, Freedom Planet 2 will launch for PC, Mac and Linux first, followed by Nintendo, potentially more depending on resources.
In the words of developer Stephen Diduro, "We've learned what works and what doesn't, what's fun and what's frustrating, what we should expand on and what we can afford to lose. With all of this in mind, we feel that we are ready to bid farewell to nostalgia and create a sequel that will define Freedom Planet's identity as a franchise." What he means by this is that from the feedback on their first game, they have weeded out all of the negative features of the game and are remaking it from the ground up for a completely new experience to shape the game's franchise, but still intend to keep the genesis feel.
As per their first game, the three original characters Lilac, Carol, and Milla, will be making a return appearance as well as the two original game modes: adventure and classic. The classic game mode allows you to watch the quite lengthy (and voice-acted) story element of the game whilst adventure is strictly gameplay. The characters will include more detail (as seen in this mock screenshot), though they still intend to keep the genesis type feeling. There will also be a new difficulty system that will allow changes to the difficulty throughout the game using gold gems.
Many of its oldest players are stoked for this new sequel to a great game. How many of you guys have played Freedom Planet and are you excited for the sequel? To keep up on the newest information in regards to updates on progress etc, be sure to check the games official website.
