Epic says the game’s launch day numbers are strong

Fortnite’s foray into the Battle Royale genre appears to be off to a strong start. Epic Games announced today that more than one million players took part in Fortnite Battle Royale on launch day, Sept. 26th.

The game’s closest competitor (and Fortnite Battle Royale’s most prominent inspiration), Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, is still far ahead of Epic’s game with more than 1.4 million concurrent players today, according to Steam. But Fortnite’s new 100-player PvP mode might catch up to PUBG soon enough.

Fortnite Battle Royale has the obvious advantage of being free and multiplatform. (PUBG is currently PC only, with an Xbox One version on the way.) The headline-grabbing public disagreement between PUBG developer Bluehole and Epic probably helped raise awareness too. Fortnite Battle Royale is available to download for PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One and doesn’t require purchasing a Fortnite founders pack to get immediate access.
