During Microsoft’s Press Conference at E3, Platinum games announced and revealed a new game called “Scalebound.” The announcement came in the form of a nearly two-minute trailer which features a human who is being pursued by a couple of dragon-like monsters within a vast forest. At first glance, the game gives off the impression of the acclaimed series, Monster Hunter, but with massive advancements. While barely any details have been released about the upcoming game, we do know that Scalebound will be an Xbox One Exclusive.
Within the trailer itself, a young man wearing headphones that look like Dr. Dre Beats witnesses two monsters battling it out and subsequently runs and maneuvers to not get caught in between them. The young man has a sword sheathed on his back and uses a bow and arrow against one of the monsters once he has sufficient position. The juxtaposition of modern headphones with primitive weapons such as swords as opposed to firearms mildly suggests that guns may not be around anymore in this time and place. The arrow that the human used had a vibrant green aura, which suggests that players will be able to attribute powers to weapons or that weapons will have powers in and of themselves in Scalebound's gameplay. Most interestingly, when the human makes sword-contact with one of the monsters in the trailer, the monster's scales seem to become part of the human as armor. Lastly, the human is seen riding on the back of one of the dragon-like monsters heading towards a Hyrda-like creature for imminent battle.
While no solid details have officially been released about the game, Microsoft described Scalebound as, "The next great adventure from critically acclaimed developer Platinum Games and renowned game director Hideki Kamiya, Scalebound transports you to a distant, hostile world. You’ll come face to face with fearsome creatures, including a formidable dragon — and the bond you forge with this awesome predator will prove crucial to the survival of both worlds." With little details to go by, we can only hope that our deepest dreams and fantasies of monster-combat will be fulfilled with Scalebound. Personally, I am sucker for monsters battling it out, with one of my all-time favorite games being War of the Monsters. Personal preference aside, seeing how well the trailer was done leaves me with high hopes about Scalebound; so, feel free to watch the trailer below!
