Call of Duty: WWII’s cooperative multiplayer component will come in the form of a Nazi Zombies mode, developer Sledgehammer Games announced today. Sledgehammer showed a single image of a decaying undead Nazi soldier’s face during its Call of Duty: WWII reveal livestream today, and reiterated the news on Twitter.

In a news release, publisher Activision described Nazi Zombies as “an all-new cooperative mode featuring a unique standalone storyline set during World War II that’s full of unexpected, adrenaline-pumping action.” Previous Zombies modes have generally focused on pitting teams of players against waves of undead enemies. Further details about Nazi Zombies won’t come until sometime after E3; Sledgehammer will use the convention in June to show off Call of Duty: WWII’s competitive multiplayer component.

Call of Duty’s Zombies mode has become enormously popular; Call of Duty: WWII will be the seventh entry in the franchise to include it, and the fourth in a row, following 2014’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, 2015’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and 2016’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

The mode in Call of Duty: WWII is called Nazi Zombies, which was its original name — Call of Duty’s strange fascination with undead enemies began in 2008 with Call of Duty: World at War, which also took place during World War II. The name of the mode was changed to just “Zombies” for Treyarch’s subsequent game, 2010’s Call of Duty: Black Ops, since it was not set during the Second World War.

Call of Duty: WWII will be the second game from Sledgehammer to feature a Zombies component, following the Exo Zombies offering in Advanced Warfare. That mode was developed by Raven Software, the Activision-owned studio that has contributed to every Call of Duty title since Black Ops. It is unclear if Raven is also handling the Nazi Zombies mode in Call of Duty: WWII; we’ve asked Activision for clarification, and will update this article with any information we receive.
