Inspired by popular FPS such as Call of Duty 2 and Medal of Honor, the developers behind the upcoming WWII inspired game Battalion 1944 aim to bring gamers a much-needed blast to the past by taking war shooters back to their well-loved roots on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. There’s no wall-running, no exosuits or cybernetics. Just you, your gun, and the wonderful smell of gunpowder and death in the air. The game is purely based on your skill as a player alone, so you won’t have anyone or anything to blame but yourself if you’re losing terribly.
Battalion 1944 will allow players to visit real world locations in-game such as Carentan and Bastogne. In order to give gamers the most visually pleasing and authentic war experience possible, the development team has traveled to real-world locations to assist with their map designs. Utilizing the power of Unreal Engine 4, the visuals they have achieved so far seem nothing short of incredible. The developers are aiming to make the maps tight and competitive. Every single map in the game will heavily focus on supporting team-based infantry combat, which will focus on balance and competition.
Speaking of competition, the progression system in the game will be purely cosmetic. You will not have to worry about players who are a higher rank than you destroying everyone on the battlefield with powerful boosts and heavy weapons. XP gained while playing will go towards unlocking visual upgrades for your accessories, weapons, and character. All of the visual upgrades will be authentic to the time period, and will allow players to create their own unique look as they grind to become the most feared player in the game. The developers wanted players to feel a personal connection to not only their character, but their weapons. You’ll be able to engrave your weapons so your arsenal will be yours and yours alone. It can be customized to however you see fit. In Battalion 1944, no two weapons will be the same.
Battalion 1944 will focus on the basic game modes we all know and love. Deathmatch, Domination, and Capture the Flag are just some of the few modes you’ll be able to enjoy. The developers are currently creating new game modes, and will soon ask the gaming community for ideas and suggestions on the game modes they would like to see created for the game. Bulkhead Interactive are going to do their best to make the development of the game as community driven as it can possibly be. They will stream design meetings which people can join and get involved with discussion about the game directly with the devs. They will also host public play tests and other community events that are solely aimed towards collecting valuable player feedback as to what they would personally like to see added and changed in the game.
On the competitive side of things, players will be able to join a Battalion and compete in the game’s global competition system, BattleRank. Each Battalion will have a season objective which will allow players to earn bonus unlocks for their character. BattleRank will come with a “highly tuned” stat tracking system which the developers claim “enables Battalion 1944 to go beyond the standard mould of shooters gone by and enables players to compete globally for rewards, glory and honour.”
In BattleRank competitions, you can ride solo, or team up with your friends. Going down either path will still contribute towards your Battalion’s season goal, and will reward you with different awards for team and solo efforts. Overall, Battalion 1944 seems like it's going to be a solid multiplayer gaming experience fans of WWII war games can enjoy.
