Yesterday, Apple started the countdown (what’s really a count-up) as we step ever closer to the 50 billion app download mark. The whole world is downloading apps, at a rate of about 1000 apps every second! The current counter is at 49,252,602,751 so by my calculations; we’re only a few days away.

“As of today, nearly 50 billion apps have been downloaded worldwide. And we couldn’t have done it without you. So we want to say thanks. Download the 50 billionth app, and you could win a US$10,000 App Store Gift Card. Or download one of the first 50 apps after that, and you could win a US$500 App Store Gift Card.”

This is the second time Apple has run this type of contest. Last year, Apple similarly gave away $10,000 for the 25 billionth app download. This was claimed by Chinese resident Fu Chunli and as well as the $10,000 iTunes card, she was given a tour of Apple’s Chine headquarters.

In a bazar twist, there’s even a chance to win the $10,000 and $500 prize without downloading a single app! Located at the bottom of Apple’s website, there’s a link that reads: “Enter to win without purchase or download…” This allows customers who don’t own iDevices to enter the competition by entering your details. This can be repeated up to 25 times!

In other news, Apple has also released the top 25 free and top 25 paid apps of all time. From the list, we can se that Facebook owns 3 of the 16 free apps; Google owns 4 of the top 25 and Angry Birds is the most downloaded paid app of all time. Feel free to take a glance at the full list below:
