Xbox Modding for Noobs

Ok this site is just about everything you will need to know how to do things like:
• Softmodding
• How to use Dothalo
• How to apply a PPF patch
• How to FTP from your Xbox to your computer
• And plenty more

Starting off

Ok, first of all let’s get some things straight.
You may be thinking “what the hell is all this modding stuff about?” But that’s ok we all feel like that some time.
First of all “modding” as we call it is a way to hack into your Xbox.
People will usually Mod or Chip a console by opening it up and inserting a chip inside it.
But for the Xbox there is another way. We will use something called a softmod.

A softmod is a way of modding or chipping your xbox without having to open up the case and insert a mod-chip. To do this you will need something called a gamesave exploit which you will get onto your xbox via memory card. This hacks your xbox and installs a new dashboard (Basically the control panel for your xbox - your xbox comes with the Microsoft dashboard) that will allow FTP access and many other features that the Microsoft dashboard will not let you do. A softmod is loaded through either of three games, Splinter cell, Mech Assault, or 007 Agent under Fire. Most people softmod their xbox mainly for halo 2 but it can be used for many other things too.

Dothalo is a program for modding halo 2 and I will go into more detail later. A PPF patch is a patch that you apply to a halo 2 map.
FTP stands for File-Transfer-Protocol. This is the process used to communicate with your xbox from your computer (transferring files etc.)

*Caution, think before you do this, u could wreck up your xbox if you’re not careful*

Softmodding

Things you will need:
----------------------------
 An xbox Action Replay with memory card (this costs about £20)

 An Xbox (duh)

 WinRAR (to extract the gamesave exploit)

 Krayzies ndure installer available from xbins in xbox/exploits/packages – then download the save for the game you are using to load the – here is a tutorial on how to use - http://www.xboxscene.com/articles/xbins.php

 An ORIGINAL (meaning cannot be in the classics range so get a pre-owned copy if you haven’t already got one) copy of Splinter cell, Mech Assault, or 007 Agent under Fire.

1) Now, to start off; extract the installer onto your desktop or somewhere that is easy to get to on your computer. (The save should come with two parts to it inside the folder.)

2) Plug in an xbox compatible memory card (I used the one that came with the action replay) with the USB adapter that comes with your action replay.

3) Open up the action replay software (if you haven’t installed it now’s a good time) and drag the two parts of Krayzies ndure installer into the pc database section. You should see on the left hand side under memory cards the memory card you plugged in.

4) Drag the first part of the save onto the memory card and wait for it to transfer. Take the memory card out and plug it into your xbox. Turn your xbox on and make sure there is no game in the cd drive. Now go into the memory section on your xbox and click on the memory card. You should see something called Linux installer or something similar. Click on that and press right on the d-pad. It should give you the option to copy it onto the hard drive. When it does copy it over and take your memory card back to your computer. Do the same process with the other half of the save then switch off your xbox.

5) Before you insert your game make sure you have no saves for it other than the exploit. Now insert your game and load up the save (this should be called Linux or something like that). The screen will go blank and a blue screen will come up.

6) When you get the choice to choose between the different options chose the backup eeprom option and wait for it to do that. *IMPORTANT YOU MUST CHOOSE THE BACKUP EEPROM OPTION BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE SAVE!!!*

7) After you have done that click on the install softmod option and it will give you a choice of dashboards (unleash x or evolution x) CHOOSE UNLEASH X, and it will give you the option of either ndure 06 or ndure 64 or something like that IF THIS OPTION COMES UP THEN CHOOSE THE ONE WITH 06 AT THE END VERY IMPORTANT. *note this may not be the order that they come up in*

8) After you have done that just sit back and wait for it to install, if you did everything correctly it should all work fine.

If it was successful then enjoy your modded xbox and all its cool features!!!
A few notes, DON’T EVER DELETE ANYTHING FROM YOUR XBOX IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT IT IS!! Also ONLY EVER SAVE ANYTHING ONTO THE E DRIVE OF YOUR XBOX!!

FTP – (File-Transfer-Protocol)

What you will need:
An Ethernet crossover cable (about £5 from any electronics shop)
FlashFXP or another FTP program

As I explained earlier, FTP is (in this case) when you communicate with your xbox from your computer, via Ethernet crossover cable, for transferring files etc.

1) Assuming you have the unleash x you will need to go into system, then go down to network or network connections (these are the same thing) and make sure your settings are set to static.

2) Change your Xbox’s IP Address to 192.168.0.3 also change the primary DNS to 192.168.0.4 , then save changes and resoftmods your xbox.

3) Plug one end of the crossover cable into your xbox’s Ethernet port and the other into your computers Ethernet port.

4) On your computer, go to “Start” “Control Panel” “Network and internet connections” “network connections” then right click on local area connections and click properties, and then go to Internet Protocol TCP/IP and click the properties button. Now, make sure that the use following IP address is selected and type in this IP address, 192.168.0.4 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and click ok.

5) Resoftmods your xbox again and then open up your ftp program on your computer (preferably FlashFXP)

6) In FlashFXP click the lightning bolt on the top right hand side. A window will popup, where it says server or url type in 192.168.0.3, the port should be at 21 and the name, password and remote path will all be “xbox” in lowercase.

7) If you have done it right 7 or 8 folders will come up depending if you have a disk in or not. All the stuff you will need is in the E folder don’t touch anything else.

*NOTE: If you want to play on xbox live then change the IP settings back to DHCP.*

*Note most of the following tutorials will be about halo 2*

How to put the download content maps for halo 2 on your computer for editing

This one is simple enough if you don’t know how to FTP read the above tutorial. ^^^
So you want to make some mods of your own so you can show em off to your friends on xbox live eh?
Well the first thing you need to do is get your maps onto your computer.

1) Hook up all of your ftp stuff and get it ready.
2) Open up FlashFXP and connect to your xbox
3) Go into E/TDATA/4d530064/$c
4) Here you will see three folders. The first has containment and warlock in it. The second has deltatap (sanctuary) and turf in it. The third has Gemini, dune (relic), Triplicate (Terminal), Elongation, and Backwash in it.
5) Drag all the map folders from the right hand side to the left (make sure the left is desktop) and make a folder called “maps” on your desktop. Inside “maps” make another folder called “backups”. Put all your maps into the maps folder, and then make copies of them in the backups folder.
*Note - don’t edit the maps in backups folder just leave them for safekeeping.*

Basic map modification

Things you will need:

• Halo 2 Maps
• The All in one modding tools pack - Link - http://www.danhrules.co.uk/forums/index.php?download=7
• And .Net Framework from Microsoft - Link - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Ok, in this section we will learn how to do simple things with a modding program called Dothalo in the modding tools pack. This is a great editor and you will use this for a lot of things.
*Note: If you are playing over xbox live the only changes to weapons that other players will be able to see is changes made to the plasma pistol and the rocket launcher.*

Run fast and Jump high

1) First of all open up Dothalo and open up the map you want to mod.
2) Next scroll down in the tag editor and click on the biped tag which has main info on your character, jump height etc.
3) Now click on either elite_mp or masterchief_mp, depending on which one you want to edit the jump height for.
4) Change the jump height in the tag editor to about 10 and then save changes.
5) Go down to the matg tag and click globals/globals
6) Ignore the sections with NaN and 0 in them and change the walking speed to about 10 forward sideways and reverse, and about 50 on acceleration.
7) Save changes then fix encryption and close map. Done!

360 Auto aim

1) Open up Dothalo and scroll down to the weap tag and choose the weapon you want auto-aim for.
2) Change the deviation angle 1 CF to 360
3) Change the auto-aim range 1 CF to 10000
4) Save changes and you’re done!
*Note - if you’re putting auto-aim on the sniper rifle make sure “aim assist only when zoomed” is unchecked*

Flying Warthog

We will make it so other people apart from you will be able to fly the warthog from the passenger seat

1) Open Dothalo and go to the vehi tag.
2) Go to objects\vehicles\ warthog\warthog and in the tag editor check flying under physics.
3) Scroll down in the tag editor and click the first drop down box where it says seats and go to 1
4) Change it from passenger, to driver
5) Go to the next drop down box and go to the number 1 again and check the driver seat, close door, and fire weapon boxes.
Save changes and done!

Flying Turrets

*Note: Other players over xbox live will be able to fly the turrets but you will not.*

1) Scroll down to the vehi tag in Dothalo and click on the banshee
2) Copy the banshees Meta Offset (Ctrl + C)
3) There are three different turrets you can make flyable, the chaingun off the warthog, the gauss off the warthog, and the spectre turret (objects\vehicles\spectre\turrets\plasma\plasma_tu rret). We will use the spectre turret so click on it and paste the banshees Meta offset over the spectre turrets.
4) Click save changes, and then go to the dependencies window. At the top click on the hlmt string and change it to the spectre turrets, then click save changes in the dependencies window. All Done!
*Note: see below in the projectile swaps tutorial on how to make the plasma pistol shoot out your flying spectre turret.*

Projectile Swaps

A projectile swap is exactly what it says in the name, when you swap the projectile of a gun to something else. For example, say I made a plasma pistol shoot out a warthog; that would be a projectile swap.

1) As usual, open up Dothalo. Scroll down to the weap tag and select whatever weapon you want to change the projectiles for.
2) Go in to the dependencies tag and scroll down to the projectile string (some weapons have two projectiles for example the plasma pistol has a charged shot and normal fire) click it and change it to whatever you want to come out of the gun. If you wanted a vehicle to come out you would change the tag in dependencies window from projectile to vehi the click on the vehicle you want in the second drop down box and click save changes. All done!

Now fix encryption and close map and we will learn how to get it back on the xbox and play it.

Getting your modded map back onto your xbox ready for playing

Ok so you have followed all of the above tutorials and now you need to get your modded map back onto your xbox right?
No Problem.

1) First of all you will need to “sign” the map. Every map has its own permanent signature that the game requires to load the map. When you mod a map that signature changes. So we have to change it back to the original. Go into the all in one modding tools program and go down to resigners. Load up the map resigner and open up your modded map. Click sign map and wait for it to work, and then we are done signing the map.
2) Now pretty much all we need to do is ftp the map back to where you got it from on the xbox and replace the old map with it.
3) Now put your halo 2 disk into your xbox and switch the xbox off.
4) Switch the xbox straight on again without ejecting the disk and it will load up halo 2, Yay!

Applying PPF patches and creating PPF patches

As you might know a PPF patch is something that you apply to a .map file and it will inject the mod into the .map file.

Applying PPF patches

1) Go into the modding tools program and go down to PPF programs.
2) Open up PPF-o-matic and click the little icon next to ISO file
3) Browse to where your unmodded version of the map is.
4) Click the drop down box where it says cd images and change that to all files
5) Put the PPF patch where it says patch and click apply!

*Note: you must resign a map after applying a PPF patch.*

Creating PPF Patches

What you will need:
PPF Studio - witch you can get of of this site.

1) Open PPF studio
2) Click the icon next to where it says “PPF File (output)” at the top and put a file name for your patch, then go to where you want to save it and press open.
3) Under “PPF creation control” keep it on general and put the unmodded version of your map in the original file part
4) Then put the modded version of the map under “patched file” and click create PPF patch.
5) When it says “found X number of differences, ready” at the bottom then it is done.

That’s the end of my super long tutorial, hope this helped you guys out and you are welcome to ask me any questions about modding or anything else at my MSN, AIM, or over Xbox Live.
